ABC: Secret German Cult in Chile Breaks 43-Year Spell (of Isolation)
http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=236048

A religious cult of German immigrants has broken decades of isolation from a world shocked by sex-abuse scandals in the group, the flight of its secretive leader and reports it once helped Chile's military government torture political prisoners.

In exclusive interviews, members of the 280-person sect ended decades of public silence to tell Reuters they had emerged from a long nightmare to the painful realization their God-like guru — a fugitive facing child-sex charges — had broken apart their families and fostered physical abuse.

The sect came here in the 1960s following Paul Schaefer, a charismatic World War II German army nurse, who cult members thought was God on earth and who preached an unnamed religion that said harsh discipline would draw them closer to the supreme being.

"Everyone saw him as a celestial being and no one dared doubt him. People were blind here. It was a huge shock to discover the truth," said Michael Mueller, a 47-year-old member of the community's newly elected reform committee.

<snip>

The apocalyptic cult barred itself behind a perimeter fence guarded by cameras and motion detectors, and once even taunted police with Nazi salutes. A judge is probing reports it provided torture chambers for the secret police during Chile's 1973-1990 military dictatorship.

4. Sounds rather like FLDS
This stands for Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints, a splinter group of the Mormons. At least it reminds me of what I am currently reading in John Krakhauer's (sp?) "Under the Banner of Heaven". It is a book well worth reading, both for the content and the fine writing.

16. I agree, so far as I have read

My wife couldn't quite get through the last bit yet. It sounds like an all around dreadful life, for everyone (even the men, if they only knew it).

P.S. When I said this had similarities to the Krakauer book, I didn't mean to include the specifically Nazi overtones of this Argentinian group.

22. Sexual repression does seem to have this result, often
Throw in "plural marriage" and wives much younger than husbands and the potential for abuse does seem to go up. One feature of the cases written about in Krakhauer's book is that the groups were very isolated from the larger culture (i.e. our's) around them. This would not be the case where the entire society is mainly Muslim, so one shouldn't really generalize from one society to the other. It would obviously be a highly controversial subject.

Sounds like Bu$h is their kind of leader, and perhaps they are eagerly looking forward to joining their republican brethren in contemplating the prospect of gassing some American liberals.

9. A Penn State Mathematics Professor, Boris Weisfeiler, disappeared ...
... near Colonia Dignidad while hiking alone near Colonia Dignidad during Christmas break in the mid 1980's:

http://weisfeiler.com/boris/

The State Department was never been able to get any resolution on what happened. A number of people have suspected that, as a Jewish immigrant from Soviet bloc Eastern European, Weisfeiler was detained by Schaefer's neo-Nazis.

12. fwiw
http://www.maebrussell.com/Articles%20and%20Notes/Colonia%20Dignidad%20in%20Chile.html

--an older piece on Dignity Colony...worth noting, also, because of the accusations about the use of drugs and child prostitutes via another person in Omaha who ended up in a late night tour of the Reagan White House---

"It seems," the report said, "that in Colonia Dignidad there is a specially equipped underground torture center with small soundproofed cells, hermetically sealed. The detainees' heads are covered with leather hoods, which are stuck to their faces with substances that are supposedly chemicals. In these cells, interrogations are carried out through electronic equipment, including loudspeakers and microphones, while detainees are tied naked to metal frames to receive electric shocks."

Allegations that the colony had become involved in political repression under the Pinochet government received dramatic support in 1977 from Juan Rene Munoz Alarcon, a former Socialist Party member who turned collaborator with Pinochet's secret police and was later imprisoned by the government for trying to protect a one-time leftist colleague.

...Abu Ghraib, anyone? ...but how could the CIA have learned such techniques from Nazis?

http://www.themedianews.com/DAGGER/CLOAK%20WIRE/consortiumnews.htm

Secret documents declassified by the Clinton administration show that the CIA's collaboration with the ex-Nazis was not merely a marriage of convenience. It was more like a deal with the devil.

The documents reveal that Gehlen had hired and protected hundreds of Nazi war criminals. The more notorious of these Hitler henchmen included Alois Brunner, Adolf Eichmann's right-hand man in orchestrating the Final Solution, and Emil Augsburg, who directed the Wansee Institute where the Final Solution was formulated and who served in a unit that specialized in the extermination of Jews. Another was the former Gestapo chief Heinrich Muller, Adolf Eichmann's immediate superior whose signature appears on orders written in 1943 for the deportation of 45,000 Jews to Auschwitz for killing.

Furthermore, the Gehlen Org was so thoroughly penetrated by Soviet spies that CIA operations in Eastern Europe often ended in the murder of its agents. To top it off, the Org fed the CIA a steady diet of misinformation that fanned the flames of East-West hostility – and thus assured the Org the continued patronage of Washington.

http://www.axt.org.uk/antisem/archive/archive2/chile/chile.htm

Colonia Dignidad (Dignity Colony), a small German settlement in the southern town of Villa Baviera (near Parral), was founded in 1961 and has since the mid-1960s been accused of being a haven for ex-Nazis. The German government has periodically, over the years, investigated its activities. During the Pinochet regime, rumours circulated that it was also used as a centre for governmental repression of political opponents.

In 1997 police attempted in vain to arrest Paul Schaefer - a suspected child molester, an active neo-Nazi sympathizer and the apparent head of the 'state within a state' at Colonia Dignidad - who had gone into hiding in a remote valley in the Andes after police entered the colony in May and discovered that he had illegally adopted 300 German children. Schaefer, who served as a medical orderly in Hitler's Wehrmacht, came to Chile in 1961 after fleeing paedophilia charges in Germany.

(just a reminder, but last year, Riggs Bank, whose board included Jonathan Bush, Dubya's uncle, was fined millions for laundering money for Pinochet, still...)

http://archives.cnn.com/2000/WORLD/americas/10/11/chile.german.colony.ap/

In 2000, Dignity Colony was accused to helping Pinochet torture Chilean citizens, and the govt. expelled three members. Sometimes justice is delayed...

In case you don't know...

15. It is perversely heartening, in a strange way
...to observe that we are not the ONLY country with absolute idiots, nitwits and assholes living amongst us. When you look at some of the cringeworthy loonies in this country, you just have to wonder. I suppose the sane among us can take solace in knowing that we are not alone!
