Report: 9/11 Victims Get $38.1 Billion
WASHINGTON -- Victims of the Sept. 11 attacks received $38.1 billion in compensation, with insurance companies picking up the largest portion of the tab, according to a study released Monday.

The report by Rand Institute for Civil Justice found that civilians killed or injured have received an average of $3.1 million per person from the government, charities and insurance companies, or $8.7 billion.

Emergency personnel killed or injured were given a total of about $1.9 billion. First responders received an average of $1.1 million more than civilians with similar economic losses, the study found. Most of the extra money came from charities.

Insurers paid 51 percent of the overall total, or about $19.6 billion. The government distributed $15.8 billion, or 42 percent, and charities paid $2.7 billion, or 7 percent.

2. So... each familiy gets, on average, 12 million?
Is that correct?

(Not complaining here. Can't put ANY price on the loss of a loved one. Just wondering if this is actually true.)

3. That sounds about right
But I have a hunch the family of a janitor didn't get the same as the family of an executive in a financial firm, so the average figure may not really be very representative.

4. Why are we making these particular people millionaires?
Aside from being hush money, I don't understand why people involved in this tragedy are given exhorbitant amounts of money when cops killed in action get zip.

I want my donations back. I thought it was to help people get through a rough time, not buy them BMW's.

No offense to the victims who have suffered tremendously--I just don't understand the sliding scale of justice.

9. The idea is to keep them from suing
Who knows what might come up if the usual procedures for discovering truth in a civil trial were applied to the 911 event. Bush obviously doesn't want to risk that. I suppose that is what you meant by hush money, though.

8. Not bad,
considering many HUNDREDS of those people
do not show up on the Social Security Administration Death index
as having been reported dead.

Scores of them left no do not appear on ANY database
when it comes to birth certificates,
school attendance,
vaccinations,
tax payments,
marriage certificates,
or birth certificates for their own children,
driver's records,
or anything else for that matter
with the SINGLE AND SOLE EXCEPTION of the fact that
two people each swore out affidavits claiming that their relative/employee had died.
Then the family member claimed the cash,
and the employer was paid compensation from another separate fund.

Fortunately there are a few families that are suing, so the truth may yet come out.
