Post-election, Bay Area artists raise the distress flag
Monday, November 8, 2004

FIRST OF TWO PARTS
The outcome of the presidential election may have been bad news for many in the Bay Area, but for much of the region's arts community, it was a call to action.

We asked artists from several disciplines how President Bush's re- election, as well as the nation's attitude on social issues as reflected in various ballot questions, would influence their art..

ANN PACKER, novelist

The author of the best-seller "The Dive From Clausen's Pier" lives in San Carlos.

"What I'm hearing is a lot of bitterness," she said. "And a lot of 'we need to learn from this' and how we need to do things differently. And needing to find a better way to reach people."

Although conceding that she doesn't "write from a political point of view, " Packer says, "Since I am a political being with strong opinions, they permeate my work. The novel I'm working on now, in subtle ways, is very much a post-9/11 book, even though I don't mention it.

5. I was in the Fruitvale District...
In Oakland, during the Dia De Los Muertos (Day Of The Dead) festival, lots of Chicano/Chicano political T-Shirts and artwork, it was hella dope. Im so proud to be from the Bay Area, where Bu$h couldn't even get 40% of the vote in 8 of the 9 counties. LMAO

6. The Denny's near the university gives free coffee
and donuts after the night shift comes on duty. They'll let you sleep in the back, too.
