Ad Rules Relaxed for NFL Bash
Mall Promotions Amount to 'Sponsor Recognition,' Park Service Says

By Karlyn Barker
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, September 4, 2003; Page B01

Rules prohibiting commercial marketing on the Mall do not apply to this week's NFL extravaganza because the promotional aspects constitute "sponsor recognition" and not advertising, National Park Service officials said yesterday.

"I think they're violating their guidelines," said Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, a lawyer with Partnership for Civil Justice who has represented protesters planning large demonstrations on the Mall. "To be turning the Mall into a billboard is, I think, what all the people would recognize as a violation of the stewardship of the Park Service."

Verheyden-Hilliard said that in some past demonstrations, police officers have threatened to arrest protesters who were distributing T-shirts or other material. "We didn't know they simply needed to get themselves corporate sponsorship by Coors," she said.

Charles Atherton, secretary of the Commission of Fine Arts, the federal panel that oversees aesthetics in ceremonial Washington, said the NFL event has crossed the line of excessive commercialism. "It's grown now beyond a reasonable amount of equipment and advertising," he said. "I would say there's not a trace of any dignity to that space. It's just a midway."

OUR National Mall is a National Park...it won't be long before you can expect this crap in the Grand Canyon and Rocky Mountain National Park...this comes complete with BIG screen TV's broadcasting sponsor's commercials...displeasure with this garbage is being shown from above, as it is raining all day in DC....

Patriotic protestors were severely restricted, but bush* corporate sponsors are NOT restricted...if you pay these 'cheap-labor conservatives', bush* waves all rules....

5. Take Pride in America Sponsored By...
"TAKE PRIDE IN AMERICA" sponsored by:

(foreground) Reebok...a British shoe company
(shallow background) 989sports, owned by Sony...a Japanese company

So it is O.K. to let foreign corporations pimp out The Mall but our own government won't force U.S. corporations offshoring American jobs to pay taxes on foreign workers to try and Keep America Strong.

Whores! The lot of them! All whores!

12. "Sponsor Recognition"
Edited on Thu Sep-04-03 07:59 PM by Crisco
Is getting fucking out of hand.

I work in radio and the big trend now among advertisers is to glom onto an event in such a way that the station that has the dubious honor of "presenting," is forced to give them uncompensated advertising mentions.

On top of that, the same sponsors expect to have their PR reps brought in for interviews regarding said event, even though the bulk of their knowledge is "we're strong backers of ... " Compelling content, that.

There was a big spat over the summer between one of the movie chains (Regal?) and the movie studio that put out the Lara Croft movie. Said studio sold a sponsorship to Jeep. Jeep bought an ad with the chain to place a 30 second spot in front of the movie (yeah, blechhhh). The studio protested, saying they weren't happy with the movie footage used.

The studio then turned around and tried to forced the theatre chain to put a Jeep and other Jeep displays in their lobby as part of the promotion, uncompensated. Regal told them to take a hike.

Let's all give a big thanks to the entertainment industry for pimping its content to the point where marketing execs, not creators, are driving content.

So what ads do you see on the Washington Monument? One for each side?

Viagra, certainly. What else?

16. did anyone watch the show?
it ended with Aretha singing the Star Spangled Banner with bursts of gold and white fireworks behind her, with huge crowds cheering (with little matching laser lights) about the start of the new NFL season. Their was an Leni Reifensthal urgency to it all.

Then Bush comes on, LIVE, and says patriotic what-nots about the troops in Iraq and then hollers-out the chant: "Are you ready for some football!?"

It was like Nixon doing Sock-It-To-Me on "Laugh-In."

Folks...this is getting too strange to make up!
