Rove reveals what led to victory (Says this is his last campaign)
http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/politics/2893164

Karl Rove, President Bush's top political adviser, continued his public victory dance Tuesday, attributing Republican dominance in part to cultural issues such as gay marriage as well as a strong turnout of regular churchgoers.

In an hourlong lunch meeting with reporters, Rove expanded on the presidential campaign and about a second Bush term. He suggested that opposition to gay marriages resonated with many voters this year. Bush endorsed a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriages.

"This is an issue of which there is broad general consensus," he said. "People do not like the idea of the concept of marriage as a union between a man and woman being uprooted and overturned by a few activist judges or a couple of activist local elected officials."

<snip>

Rove said that he expected to remain in the White House for the second term as a senior adviser. But he said presidential candidates seeking expertise in 2008 will have to look elsewhere.

"It will be left to somebody else who has a little bit more energy and interest than me," he said. "This will be the last presidential campaign I will ever do."

But rather than do it by fraud, fear and coersion, we'd like to do it by convincing everyone that we're right.

33. It's not my goal.
One party states no matter their political leaning are dangerous and/or ineffective. More importantly they are not free.

What I want are two reasonable parties that want the same thing, but differ about HOW to do something, not what.

I want two parties that agree that global warming is a threat, and while one favors doing one thing...the other favors solving it a different way.

Of course there can always be a few things here and there that are totally disagreed on.

47. I agree that the two party system will never go away,
and I also agree that it's a good thing. But as far as setting lofty goal for ourselves, at what point would you say to yourself, "I have to stop trying to convince others that my ideas are right, or I'll destroy the 2 party system?" If everyone were to agree that global warming was a threat, and you favor doing one thing, while someone else favors something else (which you don't believe will work) wouldn't you always try to convince them you're right?

51. Yes I would try to convince them....
...but arguing about HOW to solve a problem creates a very different dynamic than arguing whether there is a problem in the first place. It can be heated, and argumentative, but at the root everyone can step back and say "well we need to keep talking about this, because we agree there is a problem, so we need to come to a solution"

and in 2 party government, the majority party would get their way more than others, but we wouldn't be so far apart that we're talking about basic views of reality.

34. Not really my goal --
I'm a lifelong Dem, but believe our strong 2-party system is a cornerstone of our political stability, one of the things we could always be thankful for. I've even thought that there have been times when the balancing effect of traditional Republicans was what was needed on some issues and in some situations. The trouble is that the 2 parties have been slightly left and right of center, until one was hijacked by an extremist faction of the Right. Because of a number of factors at work, including willingness to operate outside norms and even the law, this faction has not only hijacked one of our major parties, but our country. Mr. Rove thinks he is Mark Hanna. He will go down in history, and in the annals of perdition, as something else entirely. I pray our country, and the system the Founders put in place, survive him and his minions.

14. Too bad it's all a lie
All the research point to the same numbers of "churchgoers" voting as in the last election. Strangely enough, Bush's win was by the smallest amount since 1916 (I believe, I don't have the files in front of me) for a sitting president. Hardly a mandate or a "broad general consensus".

As Goebbels said (and I'm paraphrasing), if your repeat a lie often enough, it becomes the truth. Rove was obviously a student of this philosophy.

We all know he and his ilk WILL INDEED be held accountable in the hereafter. But it would be encouraging to see some of it come home to roost while he (and I, too) are still alive. I, for one, would like to see him and the Grover Norquists and Richard Vigueries of the world live long enough to see the sea change that's inevitable when the pendulum finally does swing - and everything they've carefully built since the 1980s come crashing down.

I mean, I can't believe I'm actually putting some of my faith in something Ralph Nader said, but I am. Awhile back, Nader said (in defense of his more or less indefensible campaign) that it was going to have to get REALLY, HORRENDOUSLY bad here in America before people started waking up and realizing they've been blindly and blissfully voting against their own interests by sidling up to the GOP.

And I think the inner circle of Republicans that make the decisions for the party knows this. They know how badly Bush actually lost before Diebold "corrected" the election. That's the real reason that he will never work in a presidential election again...because he screwed up big time.

28. let's see here, karl rove says,
"presidential candidates seeking expertise in 2008 will have to look elsewhere."

and he adds, "This will be the last presidential campaign I will ever do."

The question is ... HOW MANY 4+ YEARS DOES THE BUSH DICTATORSHIP PLAN TO STAY IN OUR WHITE HOUSE?

Karl Rove is not talking about 2008, he is talking about 2008+++ ???

and ... supposing for a minute that he might be talking about 2008, i really think there is no one on earth ... it would not be quite the same ... i can't think of anyone who wants power, or to hold on to power, more than the bushes!

they are a sick seed and they needed fertile ground in which to grow all of their evil fruits ... karl rove provided that for them... they, without his brain are zilch ... and likewise, he, without their penchant for evil is zilch.

31. Rove dances now, will eventually regret
the day that he invested so heavily in the religious right's agenda. These people are serious. Unless their agenda is enacted -- a 100% ban on all abortions, 100% ban on embryonic stem cell research, villification of gays, crippling the public school system, gov't institutionalization of Christian fundamentalism, teaching of creationism as policy, nullification of family medical leave laws, faith-based grants with no strings -- they will NEVER be satisfied. As soon as they figure out the true colors of Bush-Cheney's fiscal policy Republican party -- namely giving the RR lip service for votes -- they will secede from the GOP and the two-headed monster will become a house divided.

Democrats persisted as a majority party for decades on the basis of a house of cards coalition that included southern conservatives, who ultimately divorced themselves from the progressive wing of the party. Republicans face a similar fate -- and the gold mine of increasingly impatient fundamentalist voters cannot be mined forever without one of two things happening: backlash from moderates and independent voters if the RR agenda is ultimately enacted, or backlash from the RR itself if things proceed too slowly (= "political capital" expended on economic rather than social issues). Karl Rove may savor success at the moment, but I pray that he lives long enough to see the outcome of the seeds of discontent that he and his ilk have sown.

He says he doesn't want to work in another white house, when guess what, no other white house would ever want him. I have said it before and will say it again Karl Rove is nothing but a joke. He never graduated from college and had very little to do with Bush winning the election. The only thing he did was make up lies in order to get the christian vote out. He know that he is a dumb scum-bag who has no political knowledge what so ever. He is an idiot, and it is a shame that stupid people have so much power and get paid so much. I would love to have a one on one debate with Rove and see him whimper. I had that scum bag. Because he is a nobody and he actually thinks he is somebody.

37. If repubs won by bashing gays I'm glad we lost.
I would rather lose and believe in equal rights for everyone than win by not being true to that value.

The repubs won this time by using the same tactics Dems used in the South prior to the civil rights movement. I would never have been a part of that then and I don't want any part of that today.

If there is something I feel good about in losing it's that we try to play fair and we try to do what's right. Repubs on the other hand will kill their mothers if that's what it took to win. I don't ever want us to go down that road.

The working class that bash gays and support Bush will someday wish they would have put their own economic interest first before their prejudices.

In the end we will be their for them when it comes time to pick up the pieces of this shattered country.
