Bush Offers Six-Point Plan for an Economic Recovery
Bush Offers Six-Point Plan for an Economic Recovery
By ELISABETH BUMILLER

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Sept. 4 — President Bush opened up a tough new campaign today to try to persuade the nation that his economic policies are working and to counter intensifying Democratic criticism that he has provided tax cuts for the rich while millions of working Americans have lost jobs.

At a time when the White House is worried about the effect of the uncertain economy on the president's re-election campaign, Mr. Bush went to a state he urgently wants to win in 2004 for his speech on the economy.

He offered what the White House billed as a six-point economic recovery plan: affordable health care, a national energy policy, opening overseas markets to American products, a limit on the awards paid to medical malpractice victims, a simplification of regulations on small business and an appeal to Congress to make his tax cuts permanent

----snip----

"Had we not taken action, this economy would have been in a deeper recession," Mr. Bush said. "It would have been longer, and as many as 1.5 million Americans who went to work this morning would have been out of a job."

To back up Mr. Bush's assertion, White House officials cited a Treasury Department analysis but provided no details.

Opponents of the president said they were confused by his assertion, since it implied that the economy was in particularly bad shape. "He's saying that we would have lost 4.2 million jobs without his policies," said Lawrence Mishel, a critic of Mr. Bush and the president of the Economic Policy Institute, a research institution in Washington. "It's implausible because it implies that the economy was on death's door."

You won't be seeing a USS Clinton - ever.

5. really?
When there is a Dem president and all those Reagan-Bush presidential papers are released, I wonder if they will be lucky to have a car wash named after them.

19. More undisprovable assertions
Josh Marshall had an excellent article out this week (http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2003/0309.marshall.html) where he points out many many examples of the Bush administration coming up with what he calls undisprovable assertions--statements that probably aren't true and that most experts would disagree with, but that you can't say 100% sure are untrue. Of course, there's no way to prove that the state is TRUE, either.

For example, here saying that if they hadn't implemented their tax cuts, that the economy would be much worse. That's a statement you can't say is true or false with any certainty. And note he "provided no details" on why the analysis backed up his claim.

Similarly, with all the WMD statements, that Saddam was stockpiling tons of the stuff, there's no way you could be sure it wasn't true without having the run of the whole country. Of course, now we know it was total hogwash.

By now, however, so many of his confidently expressed undisprovable assertions have turned out to be false, that the Bushies haven't an ounce of credibility left--except with the "liberal" media, of course.

21. Consistent With The Bush War On Science
What is a bedrock of science? Falsifiability. You have to be able to disprove things.

No surprise that the Bush administration is using Dark Side (undisprovable allegations) at the same time they shit all over science and learning.
