HOUSTON - A civilian affiliated with oilfield services giant Halliburton was shot and killed in Iraq, the second person connected to the firm to die in an attack in a month.

The employee, who was not identified, worked for Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg Brown & Root and was assigned to a team supporting Army mail delivery, said Halliburton spokeswoman Wendy Hall.

"The employee was fatally shot this morning in Baghdad," Hall said Wednesday. "Our employee was driving a vehicle that was escorted by military personnel. The employee was evacuated to a nearby combat support hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival."

1. Well...
...if the soldier's dying don't matter to these administration jerks, maybe one of their own dying will wake them up...

on second thought, probably not...

6. From "Catch-22"...
1st Lt. Milo Minderbinder: Nately died a wealthy man, Yossarian.
He had over sixty shares in the syndicate.

Yossarian: What difference does that make? He's dead.

1st Lt. Milo Minderbinder: Then his family will get it.

Yossarian: He didn't have time to have a family.

1st Lt. Milo Minderbinder: Then his parents will get it.

Yossarian: They don't need it, they're rich.

1st Lt. Milo Minderbinder: Then they'll understand.

7. Privatization at its best
Instead of paying military wages to a soldier to deliver the mail, they pay megabucks to a Halliburton employee to deliver the mail and military wages to several soldiers to guard him.

12. Would love to see how much this 'service' costs ala Haliburton
with the inclusion of the military costs for security for the service, and compare it to what the costs would have been without the privatization.

8. Wonder if the guy delivering US mail under military escort earns
more than those soldiers escorting him? My guess is several multiples of what the soldier earns with Halliburton also getting a generous additional overhead allowance greater than each of their employees' total payroll costs with not a cent of it ever going being paid in Federal taxes. But what do I know?

11. does this happen all the time
or is this another thought out objective to terrorize privatized who don't have to be there taking risks? It certainly is small potatos to defeating Halliburton. Only the little guys get hurt.

14. Making the soldiers pick up their own mail
I read somewhere recently that the mail wasn't even being delivered to soldiers in certain places. Instead, they have to come in and pick it up themselves -- and this is one reason why the Iraqi resistance has been so successful at setting explosives under the roads to catch American military vehicles.

I guess we can expect from now on to see a lot more of the same.
