Spitzer acts against second firm in insurance inquiry

THE scandal engulfing the American insurance industry deepened last night as Eliot Spitzer, New York’s attorney-general, filed a second lawsuit against a company involved in alleged price-rigging.

Universal Life Resources (ULR), a consulting group that advises American companies, is accused of receiving “secret fees” for steering the business of companies such as Marriott, Colgate Palmolive and United Parcel Service to certain insurers.

According to the complaint, life insurers involved in these “lucrative payoffs” include MetLife, Prudential Financial and UnumProvident.

In addition, ULR allegedly received hefty fees from its clients for “communications services”, such as printing materials and other activities.
