Bush to Address Nation Sunday

Reuters

INDIANAPOLIS - President Bush will address the nation Sunday night at 8:30 p.m. ET about the war on terrorism with a focus on Iraq, the White House announced.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan told reporters Friday Bush's speech came as the United States was in a "critical moment in the war on terrorism."

6. What a coincidence!
We're at a "critical moment" in the war on terrorism just as Chimpy gets back from his five week bender! Apparently, the blowing up of the UN mission wasn't "critical" as they couldn't pry Chimpy's hand off the bottle. I wonder what they'll call "critical" if that wasn't?

57. Doesn't sound like Iraq, folks...
"war on terrorism"

"critical moment"

93,000 more jobs lost.

Bush's poll numbers dropping like a rock.

Leaked warnings of al-Qaeda poisoning our food or water.

Further warnings of another 9/11-style attack, using aircraft from neighboring countries.

I hate to say it, but doesn't this sound like a recipie for "we are facing an imminent terrorist attack, potentially worse than 9/11, and to forestall it, I am declaring a state of emergency and suspending the Constitution for a temporary period"...?

:scared:

Parenti, Michael, Author
Mr. Parenti talks about his book, The Assassination of Julius Caesar: A People’s History of Ancient Rome, published by The New Press. The book critiques previous theories of Caesar’s murder, saying that it is a story of popular resistance against entrenched power and wealth.

12. Did Bush even both to send a rep to Sergio de Mello's funeral?
And what kind of nonsense is the Chimpified One going to spew on Sunday? "We're makin' progress."

Ignore the body bags!

"One by one, we're huntin' 'em down."

Yeah, the terrorists are JUST FLOCKING TO Iraq now, with the porous borders and all.

"The dog ate the WMD."

And no one stopped looting, of course, so we may never know where the weapons are or even whether they existed in the first place.

I won't be able to stomach his smirk, his deer-in-the-headlights stare, and the blather coming out of those lips. I'll take a walk instead.

46. An excellent question
Apparently these "wizards of diplomacy" did not think it worthwhile since no high ranking US official is evident from the coverage I have read:

http://www.swissinfo.org/sen/Swissinfo.html?siteSect=105&sid=4175164
http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,2763,1031226,00.html
http://www.charlotte.com/mld/observer/news/6605380.htm

So once more his empty rhetoric is betrayed by his actions. His newfound, poll driven alleged embrace of internationalism is as phony as a Confederate three dollar bill.

16. yawn
I wonder what the reason du jour will be now for going to war?

-He can't say it was for WMD. They don't exist.

-Can't be for freedom and gumdrops, since the people are in misery and we certainly haven't introduced anything close to democracy, nor will we anytime soon.

-Can't be for liberation, since these joyfully liberated people are sending home soldiers in body bags at a rate of one per day.

Perhaps he'll pony up some more faked intelligence, or repeat the tired and disproved mantra that Saddam was involved in international terrorism.

Who cares what he says? It's all a lie.

Bush to Give Iraq Speech on Sunday Night

By TERENCE HUNT
The Associated Press
Friday, September 5, 2003; 7:29 PM

WASHINGTON - President Bush will address the nation Sunday night about Iraq amid growing U.S. casualties and criticism about his handling of the war against terrorism.

The last time Bush made such a speech was on May 1 when he landed on the deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln and declared that "major combat operations in Iraq have ended."

Since then, the president has not spelled out how much rebuilding Iraq will cost, how long U.S. troops will have to be stationed there or what happened to the alleged weapons of mass destruction that the administration said Saddam Hussein had.

Bush will speak from the White House at 8:30 p.m. EDT for about 15 minutes, officials said. His address will cap an administration media blitz Sunday; Secretary of State Colin Powell and National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice will appear earlier on Sunday television talk shows.

67. BOOOOOO!
That is my reflexive response whenever someone mentions the president. Probably not such a good thing, though - I did it in class today when someone was saying that her sister does not understand her interest in politics, that she likes our country's leader but does not want to know how the government works because it would depress her, and when she said "she likes our country's leader" I was about to start booing and then luckily I stopped myself and just flashed a thumbs down to my friends and fellow Dean supporters who are in the class with me.

75. Or how about these keywords?
Edited on Sat Sep-06-03 04:02 AM by theHandpuppet
Let's see... just how much of one speech can be constructed using a few key words over and over again? Shall we keep count?

Terror(ists)
Homeland
Threaten
Freedom
Evil
Brave
Fear
Courage
Seek
Destroy
Will
9-11
Democracy
Cowards
Heroes
Sacrifice

Hey, toss in a few verbs and there's the speech!

But it will have to be with lite beer, or everyone will be completely shitfaced within five minutes. (Not that that's a bad idea when listening to Shrub.)

87. I agree! Incognizant reinforcement
I have noticed that the media....particularilly MSNBC, CNN and FOX seem to hammer on a certain package of meaningless phrases as explanation and or rationalization for the latest Bush stupidity. This usually goes on for two to three weeks prior to some grand announcement from the Junta which interestingly implements the same EXACT phrases. In other words, the Bubbas are being given a frame of reference from which to feel familiar and comfortable with the soon to be espoused illogical nonsense. The fact that the words mean nothing is unimportant, what is critical is that the Bubbas have already heard them on the news a few thousand times, and so accept them and do the bobble head without considering their true import. This not only gives them the impression that they are thinking...but that they are thinking in concert with the President Himself! They have heard over and over that "we are moving forward". They don't know what exactly "moving forward" encompasses, but it must be better than moving backward or not moving at all. Then the Junta confirms that we are indeed "moving forward" and Bubba is blessed with the warn fuzzy feeling that he and AWOL are like minded folks. I call this method of mind control, incognizant reinforcement.

For a long time implementation of the above mentioned scenario was a bit more surupticious...lately however, it is blatant. It is almost as if the Junta has recognized that they have been giving the public more credit for intellect than was necessary and have opted to save a little cash and time and dispense with the curtain all together. One can switch to any of the above mentioned networks and hear the same phrase, or parts of it, ad nauseum. "We are Moving Forward in Iraq". Not only from the White House Press Secratary...but from the talking heads as well.

It would be fun to distill what the script of the speech will be prior to hearing it uttered by the Fuhrer, himself. We are fed its contents, en toto, weeks before he actually gives one. Wouldn't it be a hoot to publish on the web, a close approximation of what it will be a week before it is given...maybe include with it margin notes documenting the inanity, lies and misdirections contained therein?

I of course realize that "incognizant reinforcement" is nothing new...what strikes me is the cavalier, in your face method by which it is being implemented these days. The time for cultivation has been cut in half and the seeds are being thrown down two inches thick. Is this the result of desperation or simply the realization that the American public is allot more stupid than previously thought?

79. The "fall political product rollout"
I'm afraid Shrub's gonna have another Axle of Elvis moment and make some outrageous and very destabilizing claim about "enemies of freedom, foreign and domestic" or some such. He'll try to take the offence to throw the Dem candidates AND UN opponents off balance. That means something over the top. Again.

81. Like Andy Card said...
You don't roll out new products before Labor Day. Or something to that effect.

I can't stomach the thoughts of having him speak on tv but I'll probably watch it just to see how bad he looks.

Remember before September 11 when everyone just loved to make fun of how poorly he did things? Remember when everyone thought he was a joke? Oh for those good old days again...
