EPA Report Opposes Easing of Water Rules

By Anita Huslin
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, September 5, 2003

More than half the streams and one-third of all the wetlands in the mid-Atlantic region could lose federal Clean Water Act protection under a regulatory change being considered by the Bush administration, according to a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency analysis.

The changes could leave drinking water supplies for more than 3 million people in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Delaware with no regulatory protection from pollution and leave small streams within the District and some states with no regulation at all, a report by the EPA's Philadelphia office says.

"It's just completely outrageous," said Theresa Pierno, vice president of environmental protection and restoration for the foundation. "When we look at the Bush administration, this has to be considered one of the most significant blows to damaging water quality and really setting back environmental laws. This would have an enormous impact that I think we can't ignore."

Stoner said half the ducks in the United States breed in waters that may lose protection and 40 percent of endangered species spend part of their lives in them. "The wildlife impacts are truly devastating," she said.

7. Provided they live long enough and do not die from cancer or
...genetic malformation or lack of medical care for the inevitable illnesses such environmental degradation is sure to trigger. Such a willful embrace of regressive anti-modern, anti- scientific, anti-compassionate, anti-human barbarity in order to facilitate the enrichment of a select few individuals at the expense of the many has not been seen on this scale since the days when our government was in the iron grip of the robber barons in the late 1800's. Little wonder since Rove's fancies himself a modern Mark Hanna to Junior in the role of William McKinley. They are trying to return us to the 1890's and are proceeding at breakneck speed. Still all of these are potent political issues on which they can and should be roasted. Over and over the voter needs to be reminded repeatedly of what these people are doing, namely they are allowing our air, water and soil to be poisoned for profit.

3. We are puppets
The admin directs where the fires are for the left to put out. I can't even tell anymore which other crisis they want to direct our resources away from, there are so many.

The Saudi/Russian oil deal, gas prices, energy grid, Iraq, Afghanistan, recall, TX redistricting, Den primary, NYC air, ad infinitum, comes to mind. WHICH is MOST deadly????!!!! Who the hell knows.

6. Is it possible that they know when the Democrats FINALLY get into office
they will move heaven and earth to clean things up, and repair all the damage they did, so ultimately things will get better?

To do all the cleanup work, Democrats will have to raise taxes, of course, so they will have something to bitch and howl about while the Democrats are doing all the dirty work. Republicans will have a platform to run from the next time, protesting the tax hikes, etc.
