Gregoire edges ahead, but more counting to come
The deadline to certify results is Wednesday, but a recount is possible

By Rebecca Cook, Associated Press Writer
November 16, 2004

OLYMPIA — Democrat Christine Gregoire took the tiniest of leads on Monday night against Republican Dino Rossi in the governor's race.

Gregoire edged ahead by 158 votes out of more than 3 million cast, after days of trailing Rossi. Democrats celebrated when they heard that election officials in King County — which favors Gregoire — discovered they had 10,000 more uncounted ballots than previously estimated.

"I'm beginning to think we might win this," said state Democratic Party Chairman Paul Berendt.

Rossi's campaign was thrown for a loop by the King County news — just the latest twist in the two-week roller coaster ride that is the 2004 gubernatorial election.

1. recount almost certain at this point
man, this is wild. I live in King County and frankly I don't know anyone who voted for Rossi -- they call him "Bush in Tony Soprano's clothes".

7. As long as she beats him by 2,000 votes
there will NOT be a recount - I just cannot believe how this POS got this many votes...

we voted for a Demo Senate, a Demo House, a Demo Senator and a Demo Pres - HOW THE HELL COULD EVERYONE THEN VOTE FOR A REPUKE GOV??????

Especially one who is so slimy and foul

8. I have HOPE Christine will win!
We REALLY need Christine Gregoire to win this. Washington State will then have their Governor, and it's 2 senators all women and all Democrats! It's one huge bright spot on the overall gloomy national Re-Pug picture.
I live in San Juan County (a group of islands on the coast where I can see Victoria, Canada 10 miles away across the water) We also elected 2 Democrats as our County Commissioners to join our other Democrat Commissioner.
I must say I am proud to live in such an enlightened county.
Gregoire beat Rossi here 6o%-37% and John Kerry creamed the chimp
65%-32%
However, the Island populace is in a depressed major funk and serious disbelief that *chimp and Rove apparently stole another one.

a boring centrist milquetoast, just like every other democratic politician in washington state. gary locke, wooo! go status quo! zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

rossi presented just enough of a moderate face to fool the sub/exurbanites.

11. excellent analysis
that's sort of how I felt too. Of course, I voted for her, but what a lackluster campaign. This race was hers to lose, and she did a "good job" making it such a nail biter. Should have been a slam-dunk for a Democrat out here.

10. More votes found
Democrats celebrated when they heard that election officials in King County — which favors Gregoire — discovered they had 10,000 more uncounted ballots than previously estimated.

I am sure the repubs are screaming like stuck pigs over this one.
