GOP envisions Hillary vs. Powell matchup
By DEVLIN BARRETT
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

WASHINGTON -- Hillary Rodham Clinton vs. Colin Powell in 2006?

That's the political heavyweight matchup envisioned by a Republican congressman who is urging the outgoing secretary of State to return to New York and challenge the first-term senator.

Rep. Vito Fossella of New York said he spoke to Powell on Tuesday and made the case for the retired four-star general to enlist in the Republican Party's effort to defeat Clinton, a standard-bearer for the Democrats.

"His roots and heart have always been in New York. I think he'd make a great representative and I urge him strongly to consider running," Fossella said.

28. Hillary will not run in 2008!
You think the Swift Bloat Liars were bad? Wait until Hillary runs...every lunatic neocon bloviator will be tripping all over themselves beating a path to the FAUX news studio to spew their bile against her...they'll make Ann Coulter and Michael Savage sound like the voices of reason...the Vince Foster "murder" would be at least two months worth of headlines...if she's smart she'll stay in the Senate until a Dem majority comes along, then she'll have some real power...

59. Probably because they think they still have a score to settle.
They never beat Clinton. They just barely impeached him, but couldn't take it all the way. They couldn't stop her, either. Can't outsell either of 'em, bookwise. Probably can't stand it that Bill can go ANYWHERE around the world AND/OR most of this country and be treated almost like a rock star, and their little turd has to force people to sign loyalty oaths to ensure they're not going to pee on his parade. And deep down, I suspect they realize jackass junior's overall record in the White House will pale by comparison to Big Dog's.

Every instant that they have to see his picture or think about him, they're reminded of the eight years that got away, and the imperial entitlement to the White House that jackass senior was deprived of by Clinton's success. And they hate Hillary because she shares his luster and part of that eight-year success story - they couldn't get her down, either, much as they tried. Probably doesn't help 'em that these types are so stunningly and incomprehensibly threatened by smart, powerful, capable, independent, articulate, well-educated, accomplished women. Look what they tried to do to Hillary (AND, also, to Teresa Heinz Kerry, for that matter!).

All they know is hate, character assassination and revenge. Hope it finally takes 'em down. ALL THE WAY down.

34. Hillary will never lose to anyone
Hillary is a true master politician and too beloved by too many people to lose to anyone. Guliani or Powell would both lose to her. I think the GOP is STUPID to run a strong candidate like Powell or Guliani because if they lose to Hillary everyone will say "Wow look how strong hillary is, she can beat anyone" and it would actually give her a huge boost for the 08 nomination.

44. Heya, folks.
This is my first post. Please be gentle. :)

I think it would be easier for Hillary to defeat Colin Powell than Rudy Guliani. Can we cross party lines in NY in the primary, like what happens in Georgia? The cons in GA voted for Cynthia McKinney's primary opponent in the 2002 primary, IIRC. That knocked her out of contention.

Can this happen in NY? could we determine who the opponent would be, and vote for the "least likely to succeed"?

Edited on Tue Nov-16-04 07:43 PM by Mizmoon
Guliani may, and I stress may, do well in the city, but there is all of upstate NY to woo as well. I can't see Rudy doing well there. He's got that slick city thing that they really don't like at all.

Powell also would have an uphill climb upstate.

Hillary only did well there because of her "Listening Tour" and will do well again because her office is the best, most responsive I've ever seen. You ask them a question about anything at all and it will be answered within a day or so. Service with a smile, and she pisses off the Red States to boot. Go Hill!

ON EDIT: Oh, where are my manners? Welcome to DU! :hi:

55. Upstate New York
Actually, upstate NY is generally moderate to center-right. That's why NY has a Republican Governor even though NYC and even Guiliani were against him. Guiliani would actually do better outside of NYC in any statewide contest (well, except for the primaries). As for Powell, he'd be a formidable candidate but I just don't think that he'd be interested in running, especially now that he can make millions on the speaking circuit and in other private industry pursuits. Anyway, he has at least a year to decide.

45. If she can "tell it like it is" and point out Powell's record of lies...
...and frame him as "the liar who got us into the war for no reason"-then she will have no problem.

Ridicule the "aluminum tubes" and the "drones" and "mobile weapons labs"

I dont care if she "voted for the war" or not- SHE never lied about the evidence- Powell did.

If she cant tell it like it is, then she will lose, and it will be her own fault-all she has to do is HAMMER him w/ the truth and she will be fine.

The Republicans hate him for speaking up against the invasion and not touting the Bushian lies. The Dems hate him for being a lackey. He's a cipher now. He's been neutered. Marginalized. The best thing he can do is be a good soldier and fade away.

Apperntly there are 59 million fo them. Although New York is a solidly Democratic state, it has to have the ability to go for the GOP (Pataki has been elected three times, and NYC hasn't had a Democratic mayor since 1993).

49. Nope, They Want Rudy....
He would be a formidable opponent for Hillary.

Personally, I think we should encourage Guiliani to run for President in 2008, and pledge our support as long as he remains socially Liberal. Of course, I might have truly supported Guiliani, but after his whoring in this last election, no way.

The thing is, if we encourage people like Guiliani who are socially Liberal, we an exploit the buried rift in the Republican Party between the "Religious Right" and the Pro-Business types who really don't care if gays marry or women have abortions as long as they have their tax cuts.

The danger of course is, some one like Guiliani might actually win. But they're talking about Senator Cat Killer running in 2008 and I don't see how Rudy would be any worse.
