Char-Broil Grill Production to Be Moved to China (1500 jobs)

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - The W.C. Bradley Co. announced Tuesday it will shift manufacturing of its Char-Broil grills to China, threatening 500 full-time and 1,000 seasonal manufacturing jobs in Columbus.

Char-Broil plans to stop making its 2 million annual grills by the end of 2006, with normal production next year.

"We expect there will be jobs lost, but we don't know how many to say at this point," W.C. Bradley chairman and CEO Steve Butler told the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer.

Butler said pressure from Chinese manufacturers has been growing over the last four years. He said the decision was between moving the operation to China, where grills can be produced for 25 percent less, or "get out of the business."

1. Oh, gosh, in Georgia? How sad!!
Don't worry, I'm sure they'll be able to head for the nearest Wal-Mart to pick up the same grills they used to make - and at low, low everyday prices, too!

3. what's ironic
is Columbus, is one of the few cities that went Blue in Georgia. People in this county/City really supported John Kerry.

I hate to hear this, this is going to hit Columbus really bad.

10. I Am Afraid That We Are Not Yet Seeing The Full Effects Of Offshoring
Edited on Tue Nov-16-04 11:47 PM by loindelrio
I watched the Frontline on Wal-Mart tonight. It was really more focused on the offshoring of American jobs, primarily to China. What impressed me was that the majority of the offshoring has occurred in the last 3-4 years.

My theory is that we are living on borrowed time. The only thing keeping the economy afloat is Federal deficit spending, borrowing against private assets (real estate, retirement, etc.), and the remains of the liberal social welfare system.

In other words, it is starting to appear that America has fallen victim to a Tony Soprano style 'bust-out'. And we all know what happens when the bills come due.
