Chief of C.I.A. Tells His Staff to Back Bush -NYT
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/11/17/politics/17intel.html?hp&ex=1100667600&en=bdf50ba54566e1cb&ei=5094&partner=homepage

(snip) Porter J. Goss, the new intelligence chief, has told Central Intelligence Agency employees that their job is to "support the administration and its policies in our work,'' a copy of an internal memorandum shows.

"As agency employees we do not identify with, support or champion opposition to the administration or its policies," Mr. Goss said in the memorandum, which was circulated late on Monday. He said in the document that he was seeking "to clarify beyond doubt the rules of the road."

While his words could be construed as urging analysts to conform with administration policies, Mr. Goss also wrote, "We provide the intelligence as we see it - and let the facts alone speak to the policymaker.'' (end snip)

There are a lot of leftovers from the Clinton era in there. Of course Bush is going to get rid of them. He was angry about their attempts to undermine him in the election campaign.

..about the WMD lie, or simply to point that Saddam never got yellowcake from Niger is "undermining" Dear Leader.

Basically pointing out anything related to the "Reality Based World" or those pesky things called "facts" equals undermining the president.

28. Undermine???
You tell a guy that there are no WMD and that starting a war with Iraq is the worst move you could possibly make in the "War on Terror", and he completely ignores you. You leak this information out as best you can to the reality based world, and the press and half the country ignores you. You can't undermine this f'cking chimp. They need to get better at this "undermining" business if this country is to be saved from the Chimp King.

3. Goss' quote is straight from Wolfowitz's CIA playbook
Check out this paper by Wolfowitz on the CIA website. Wolfowitz was a member of "Team B". This is what Wolfowitz says the Team B project proved:

"Artificial separation of intelligence and policy, in contrast, serves only to degrade the performance of both systems.

Great harm is done if differences in professional values cause the two groups to avoid close contact.
How to cooperate? Ambassador Wolfowitz believes:

Intelligence production should be driven by the policy process."

Yep, we will now have Doug Feith's OSP set-up on a larger scale...the whole freaking CIA. The CIA is being destroyed by the folks at PNAC.

51. I still don't think they get it Demeter
Forget the blogs of citizens like this one here, people have the right to discuss and comment. But what many did, like Maureen Dowd only served to galvanize the hard right. Michael Moore and Maureen Dowd in particular BECAME the issue and gave the hard right a reason to vote. The hatred for Bush drove left wingers to the polls in enormous numbers, but the unabated hatred for people like Maureen Dowd drove more righties.

She just doesn't get it, nobody really cares what she thinks. Michael Moore has now made 1/2 a billion dollars off of others misfortunes. Between Columbine and now Iraq, he's profited off the backs of dead kids. Far as I know he's contributed ZERO to the families of the dead soldiers that he had no problem using on his site.

Take the comments down in Miami last weekend where either Dowd or her sidekick referred to those that voted for Bush as "Walmart type people". Yeah, that's smart and won't get them out in droves again in 4 years.

26. That's precisely what the CIA's analysts are NOT supposed to do
The CIA's supposed to gather intelligence with complete impartiality. Operatives, on the other hand, are out there to do the bidding of the administration, so in that sense he's not saying anything new.

Students of the Nazi era will remember that the real methods of consolidation were the enabling act and getting the military to swear a loyalty oath. In return for purging the SA (and their embarrassing gay leadership) Hitler got the armed services to swear a loyalty oath to him personally. By doing so, he elevated himself above the state.

To have Goss cashier anyone who isn't rigidly partisan and remind them that their loyalty is to George Bush rather than the Constitution, Congress and the people is much the same thing.

I wonder when the "national emergency" will start...

52. Again. I don't understand this.
Yes, the democrats approved this guy. Our democrats in congress are supposed to be the opposition party and Goss was a partisan choice.

One of the problems at the CIA that we heard about was that the CIA gave the oval office intelligence information that was skewed to what the oval office wanted to hear. The reports were not objective enough.

So we get Goss, a party loyalist, to head the CIA?

I fully understand why Bush nominated him. I can't understand why the democrats went along. But then again, the democrats haven't acted like they represent us and the democratic party for four years.

42. Beria Goss
F#@*!ing Porter "Lavrentii Beria" Goss. Purging the NKVD, sorry, the CIA, for the benefit of the Party.

"Lads, Your duty is to the Son of the Great (not Other) Father, Bush, and by extension to your country. Bush is the country, and the party."

This will definitely be a short-term disaster for effective U.S. Intelligence; whether it is a long-term disaster depends on how long the Bush Gang and its successors rule before they are voted out by margins that even theft or martial law cannot stop, and how many old hands can be persuaded to come back and help rebuild once the Gang is gone.

Interesting how the all-American Bush Gang seems to take its cues from the Communist Party of the old Soviet Union--just deny inconvenient truth, rig the economy to benefit a few, get rid of all but the yes-men and corrupt, and politicize everything.

Fortunately, we still DO have the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and a few other good things available to us. Even this ill-famed Gang will pass, probably sooner than we think.

Here is their "administration friendly" version of the story:
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20041117/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/cia_goss

CIA Director to Employees: Avoid Politics

(snip)...WASHINGTON - Moving to tighten control over the nation's spy agency after widespread criticism and internal dissent, new CIA (news - web sites) Director Porter Goss is telling employees to avoid politics and keep their focus on serving the administration.

"We do not make policy, though we do inform those who make it. We avoid political involvement, especially political partisanship," he wrote in the e-mail on Monday.

The White House made clear Wednesday that the agency's role was to provide policy-makers with intelligence. "It's not to set policy," spokesman Scott McClellan said.

"'Support' means intelligence support," said a CIA official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. (end snip)....

Sure.....We all know you meant "intelligence support", when you said "we support the administration and its policies in our work."
Yeah, right.
