DETROIT - Compuware Corp. began another round of layoffs Tuesday, employees said.

The software and computer services company did not say how many workers were let go, or even directly confirm the layoffs.

But several employees told The Detroit News that they estimated 200 to 300 people lost their jobs. A few of the laid-off employees said security personnel escorted them from Compuware's downtown Detroit headquarters, and they were told they had been fired in a cost-cutting move.

"Compuware has a responsibility to its shareholders and employees to ensure the organization remains effective and efficient," company spokesman Doug Kuipers said in a statement. "To meet this obligation, Compuware has an ongoing program to maximize how effectively we spend money on salaries. From time to time we make reductions based on performance, particularly in the sales organization. ...

The employees who said they were escorted from the building said they worked in Compuware's in-house technology division.

1. So glad Compuware was supposed to help with Detroit's revitalization
How depressing. Just what Detroit needs. Well, it still has the Super Bowl, right? Is that this year?
Detroit is such a sad city. Cheesy ass suburban types think it's 'scary' but really it's just sad.

2. How many millions did they get in tax breaks?
I hate this "tax breaks for creating jobs" horseshit. It's not as if places like Detroit had an overabundance of cash to throw around.

4. they previously cut workers pay up to 60%!
Tech firm to staff: No more pay cuts
Some say Compuware trying to keep workers

March 20, 2004

Compuware Corp. plans to restore pay cuts, thanks to improved financial performance by the largest Michigan-based high-tech employer, chief executive Peter Karmanos Jr. said in a Friday e-mail to employees.

The move reflects increased sales of computer software by Compuware as more businesses increase their technology purchases in the rebounding economy. But some Compuware employees say restoring the pay cuts is an attempt to retain employees who are considering leaving.

Most of the cuts in pay -- which ranged from 5 percent to 60 percent when they were announced in October -- will be rescinded effective April 1.
