U.S. Expresses Regrets for Iraq Shooting
Edited on Wed Nov-17-04 08:29 AM by maddezmom
BAGHDAD, Iraq - The U.S. ambassador to Iraq (news - web sites) expressed regret Wednesday over the fatal shooting by a Marine of a wounded and apparently unarmed man in a Fallujah mosque but said the incident would not undermine U.S. efforts to remove guerrillas from the city.

Images of the shooting over the weekend, aired widely on Al-Jazeera television, have angered Iraqis — particularly the Sunni Arab minority — and Arabs across the region. American and Iraqi authorities have been trying to stem the outrage.

The U.S. military said Tuesday it was investigating the shooting after pool video footage taken Saturday by NBC showed the incident during an operation of the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment.

"No one can be happy about an incident such as that one, but the important point is that the individual in question will be dealt with," Ambassador John Negroponte told reporters. "The matter is being looked into and whatever measures are necessary under our system of military justice I know will be taken."

4. yeah, like where is the apology for all the civilians that were killed
 and the fact that they are only apologizing because the "video" has been shown worldwide.

9. Right wing radio is clear: the video and its release are the crime
Clear enough that all our problems are solved if the librul media just doesn't tell us what happens in Iraq.

5. Negroponte's statements?
If that's what you're talking about, yes, I do. Kind of a spit in the face, considering. I'd laugh, but I'm too incredibly sad. :(

13. Yeah, Negroponte's had a lot of practice
Making these kinds of mealy-mouthed statements of "regret" after another atrocity committed by the American wehrmacht or its retainers comes to light while he's in charge. Negroponte's greatest regret is having to express regret when these things come to light.

19. Negrogonte and few images come into my mind. Latin American,
specifically, Nicarauga, Iran-Contra. I'm surprised by nothing of what is happening in Iraq anymore, Negroponte's in charge, this is his MO.

2. Regret? That's not good enough!
I love how our government only investigates a war crime if it's photographed or filmed for all the world to see. We know the only thing they'll be investigating is why footage of this incident was allowed to leave Iraq, and the Marine will get some kind of punishment, and they'll leave it at that.

8. An isolated incident
That's basically waht he's saying.

How many "isolated incidents" does it take to turn into a systemic problem?

Especially with the news of the 4 total in that mosque. Makes me ill.

10. You have to wonder just how isolated something like that is...
the marine knew he was being filmed and it didnt't seem to stop him.

God only knows what was going through his mind. "kill or be killed" or "just another raghead". And God only knows what kind of brainwashing the leaders are doing to the troops to get them psyched up.

I just know we shouldn't even be there. and I am so sad for Iraq and it's countrymen and for America and my countrymen.

14. You mean they found another bad apple?
like the few bad apples at Abu Ghraib? I liked the Army Times editorial that said yeah there were a few bad apples - at the top of the pentagon.

<<Ambassador John Negroponte told reporters. "The matter is being looked into and whatever measures are necessary under our system of military justice I know will be taken.">>

"looked into", "whatever measures are necessary" = whitewash, and yet another grunt blamed for the entire miserable failure trickling down from the rot at the top.

17. Action will be taken to keep further incidents like this from BEING FILMED
"No one can be happy about an incident such as that one WAS FILMED, but the important point is that the individual in question WHO FILMED IT will be dealt with," Ambassador John Negroponte told reporters. "The matter is being looked into and whatever measures are necessary under our system of military AND MAFIA justice I know will be taken."
