Fresh off what some have coined their “moral values” electoral victory, congressional Republicans moved quickly to pass so-called indecency legislation this week, but the bill has become bogged down in the Senate amid opposition from entertainers and broadcasters.
Capitol Hill and K Street sources said that, in the wake of the election, GOP leaders this week wanted to pass their indecency legislation, which is aimed at cracking down on indecent material over the airwaves. The legislation, which has passed both chambers by large margins, is being blocked through anonymous holds in the Senate.
Backers of the bill view the quick enactment of the indecency bill as an immediate reward to religious conservatives who came out to back Republicans on Nov. 2 and a punishment to the Hollywood establishment, which strongly opposed President Bush’s reelection. However, the prospects of the measure’s being signed into law before Congress adjourns appear dim.
..............
Lara Mahaney, a spokeswoman for the Parents Television Council, said that Democrats were stalling the indecency bill on First Amendment grounds and that Republicans were blocking it because of special-interest concerns.
..............
Jon Tripp, a spokesman for the Energy and Commerce Committee, said the issue has become a battle between House Republicans who were fighting to protect families and Senate Democrats who were more concerned with protecting the interests of Hollywood.
