Almost 3,000 same-sex marriages performed in Massachusetts since May 17
Newlyweds Gail and Betsy Leondar-Wright now walk hand-in-hand with a greater sense of entitlement. Rod and Lindel Hart revel in the simple act of checking off the "married" box on applications, even on federal forms that do not recognize their union. "I will never, ever check the 'single' box again," said Rod, 31, of Greenfield, Mass.

Tanya McCloskey feels the full impact of Massachusetts's year-old gay marriage decision when a neighbor asks, "So how's the wife?"

"It's still new to me," said McCloskey, 52, who married Marcia Kadish on May 17, the day the landmark court decision took effect and the wave of same-sex weddings began taking place across the state. "It takes me a minute to answer, and I get a little giggly."

It was a year ago Thursday that the Massachusetts supreme judicial court ruled that the state constitution guarantees gay and lesbian couples the right to marry. But the aftershocks are still being felt--in a political upheaval that has been credited with swaying the presidential election, in a cultural battle over the future of matrimony, and in the daily lives of the thousands of couples who took vows they once never believed possible.

1. And this affects the Christian fundamentalists how?
They don't even bother to associate with gay people. All that sinning and all.

2. It makes them seethe with jealosy that someone might be having more fun
than they are. We're supposed to be postponing enjoyment in this life time to save it up for the afterlife, don't you know?

10. Some questions for you
Did the pro-gay marriage MA legislators fare well in the election, or did the anti-gay ones do better? I suppose there will be another attempt at a vote in the next session, which if it passes sometime in the session, will clear the issue for the 2006 ballot.

Do you really have confidence that Massachusetts voters will do the right thing? I was able to observe the Oregon campaign close up, and I was pretty sure that the wave of hate would be stopped there, but it didn't happen.

As you are probably aware, the MA constitutional amendment provides that all of the gay marriages will revert to civil union status upon adoption, and that means the fundies will be able to say that "no family or couple will be broken up". Given the state of acceptance of gay marriage in this country, I fear they will prevail in MA. What's your take from that coast?

12. HA! You don't have to worry.
The only red things about Massachusetts are the leaves in fall and our asshole governor. We aren't overturning that ruling. The state is more heavily Dem than pretty much any other state in the Union, with the exception of maybe IL.

MA voters have failed only in the governorship. Nowhere else.

14. Thanks
But they did elect a Mormon governor, after all, and because of generations of missionaries, you can't say no one knows about this cult. I really thought that Oregon would be tolerant on this issue, but there are a lot of people who are not willing to state their opposition to gay marriage, but when given the privacy of the voting booth, are more than willing to show predjudice.

How did the pro-gay marriage legislators fare in the general election?

11. The only thing about the gay marriages that bothers me
is that there are now official documents which clearly identify the couples -- makes them easier to round up when the concentration camps are opened.

I fear for them.

17. You are joking, right?
I have read about those so called camps of the NWO also, but to me the whole idea is too horrific to even consider. I want PROOF, and not just blogs on the Net.
