Mississippi Native Confirms He's In Running For Top U.S. Ag Post

Bill Hawks, a longtime DeSoto County resident who is serving as U.S. undersecretary of agriculture for marketing and regulatory programs, confirms that he is in the running to succeed outgoing U.S. Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman.

The White House announced Veneman's departure Monday, along with U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, Education Secretary Rod Paige and Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham.

Others being mentioned as a possible replacement for Veneman are Chuck Conner, White House farm adviser; Allen Johnson, the chief U.S. agricultural negotiator; and Charles Kruse, president of the Missouri Farm Bureau Federation.
