Specter won’t block anti-abortion nominees
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6485741/

After two days of appealing to fellow GOP senators, embattled Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania said he would make a public statement to assure Republicans at large he would not block anti-abortion judicial nominees from President Bush.

“I’m working on it,” Specter said of the statement after receiving more Senate support despite calls from anti-abortion conservatives that he be skipped over as the next chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

15. I don't know if we CAN return to that era, coat-hangers are these big

2. Attn. GOP moderates:
You like being lapdogs? Is being re-elected worth the humiliation and abandonment of your values? You invited the monster into your tent...now you're paying the price.

Arlen Specter is a one who shows ignoble fear in the face of danger and threats.

6. I'm so glad
I didn't vote for this piece of dreck! Now I can truly say I'm embarrassed to come from PA, though it's one more reason to work against Santorum in 2006!

7. I knew this would happen...
Why can't politicians stand up for what they believe in and why would anyone vote for a Republican in the first place!

9. What he said first is still right
All he basically said to the RW was good luck getting to a confirmation vote on an nominee who is clearly anti-abortion without using the "nuclear option."

The Republican Senate caucus had their little circle jerk in Frist's office, everybody saved face and Specter got his precious, I mean chairmanship. Hatch and Lott and all the ol' boys came out publicly for him and he agreed to not get in their way.

Doesn't change anything. They're going to have to nuke us and they probably will.

10. That's right! He hasn't really changed his statement at all.
I grew up in W PA, and only moved in 1987. I was never a real fan of Arlan's, but I can't say that I detested him either. I think he's smart enough to realize that a real radical nominee can be stopped for a lot of different reasons, and he just won't use the abortion issue as one of them.

21. Please, some of us have kids here, can you be more specific about the term
'they're going to have to nuke us' Do you infer that our own government will nuke us in order to get us to follow the program they otherwise would not be able to convince us to accept?

24. no, it's a metaphor for a parliamentary tactic Senate Repukes might use
I meant that the Republicans in the Senate would use the "nuclear option," a metaphor for the parliamentary tactic of appealing to the Presiding officer of the Senate (Cheney) for a ruling on the constitutionality of a filibuster of a Presidential nominee. Cheney then rules it's unconstitutional to filibuster a Presidential nominee. Democrats would need 51 votes to overturn that ruling.

11. He wants the chairmanship badly enough to genuflect to the RW
Edited on Wed Nov-17-04 08:21 PM by Mandate My Ass
He portrays himself as a moderate and a maverick but he has always sold out to TPTB when push came to shove.

Magic bullet, Anita Hill etc. etc.

12. he knows who butters his bread.
he also knows how NOT to be painted as a litmus-tester. His statement is rather vague. He could block based on other grounds. He could stand aside if the dems try to block. Then again, he could just tow the line.
He's not giving any hints, we'll just have to wait and see.
My guess is he'll tow the line like a good little Rethug.
Let's get ready to filibuster.

17. SPECTER - "...number one priority... is to reelect Sen. SANTRORUM."
"Sen. Santorum has been enormously helpful,” said Specter Tuesday. “He’s gone above and beyond the call of duty. My number one priority in the next two years is to reelect Sen. Santorum.”

NOT Pennsylvania, NOT America, NOT the economy, NOT Iraq, NO, NO. NO.

the NUMBER ONE PRIORITY for specter is reelecting SANTORUM !!!

23. I can't wait for all the Fundy girlies to go home knocked up
and not be able to get an abortion. Oh, I wish I could see the look on the face of the moralists then. Hopefully the Fundy daughters are doing the dark skin guy down the street so they get a nice off-white baby. Yes, race mixing is good and mix-race babies even better. And the fundies will LOVE those little half-breeds like God's little gift. lol

I am going to love the next 4 years... when all else fails, revel in the misery of your enemy.
