Can a left turn save Democrats?
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2005/02/11/EDGH1B8JAF1.DTL

if it's articulated well and if the Dems don't let the Repukes dictate the total agenda, HELL YES!

THE IMPENDING selection of Howard Dean as head of the Democratic National Committee has been widely interpreted as a sign of the party regulars' determination to put up a more liberal and aggressive opposition to the Republican agenda that is now dominating American politics.

There is no question that the Democrats will have a hard time taking back the White House, U.S. Senate and House of Representatives -- all now controlled by the GOP -- unless they can present a compelling competing vision.

1. Left turn, right turn, turn up the music...feh.
It's about a return. Returning to being Democrats. Setting our own agenda, based upon our traditional party values.

Not sucking off corporate america for the sake of sucking them off, and giving them primacy in all decisions.

America works best when there is balance between all the disparate elements that makes it up.

2. America Works Best When
real people working with reality and some degree of intelligence and ethics get together to make life better for EVERYONE.

In other words, the complete opposite of the GOP agenda, policies, tactics, and goals.

3. I ain't turning ,period...Who sets up the goalposts anyway?
This perception about "mainstream values" is bogus. I'm proud of who I am and I'd like to see the debate framed by us. Time to play offense.:bounce: :kick: :headbang:

4. Inessential
Political parties are tools, not purposes in themselves. But only more socialism, more enviromentalism, more truth, more wisdom can save the future of our children.

5. Whether it saves us or not...
...returning to our core values and status as an opposition party with an alternative vision is the only course of action that serves any purpose. If winning elections meant being just like Republicans, then we would effectively become a single party dictatorship and that would be a development which Dems need not legitimize. In such an eventuality, there would be enough myopic, jingoistic, flag-waving chauvinists to cheerlead without our help. What good would winning do us if we had to become the evil we loathed to achieve electoral success? Talk about your Pyrrhic victory.

8. I am reminded of a quote by Lincoln
About Grant. He was asked why he didn' fire Grant for his drinking problems, and in response, he said "I can't spare him, he fights!". Frankly given the "helpful" advice to avoid Dean given to the dems by the MSM, which borders on the hysterical (and I don't mean funny), I think we are on the right track. The more they hate him the more certain I am that he is exactly what we need.:D
