Molly Ivins: Screw the children
Budgets are the guts of government. That's where you find the answer to the first of the three important questions about who runs a society: Who's getting screwed? Who's doing the screwing? And what the hell will they do to us next?

There was a time when reporters actually read budgets to find out what was going on, but the things are so humongous these days, we've given up on that. Consequently, there's usually a bit of a pause after a budget comes out, while we wait to hear from the various special interest groups that study their own section of a budget in minute detail. Then, the screaming from injured parties commences, and the press presumably sits up and takes note of who's screaming loudest.

With President Bush's proposed budget, may it die in committee, no pause is necessary. Read any overview of the proposal, and you can see exactly who's getting screwed: children.

<snip>

In fact, that's something I've long noticed about George W. Bush: He really doesn't see any connection between government programs and helping people. Promoting the general welfare, one of the six reasons the Constitution gives for having a government in the first place, is not high on his list. I refer you back to his immortal statement while governor: "No children are going to go hungry in this state. You'd think the governor would have heard if there are pockets of hunger in Texas." He'd been governor for five years at the time.

6. What kind of Christian is Dubya?
Edited on Thu Feb-17-05 03:19 PM by gottaB
He's no mere salad bar Christian conservative. He takes the nastiest, most discredited tenets of Puritanism and Calvinism and weaves them into a web of deception. Self-deception is perhaps forgivable, among us mortals, but what the right wing is doing with Bush's religiosity is not.

What rational mind would prefer a plutocalvinist theocracy to a secular government that guarantees everybody's freedom of religion? The masses of Christians who voted for Bush were for the most part not considering the specifics of the man's belief system or its implications. They were misled.

John Kerry was perhaps the most pious man I have ever voted for. I simply cannot fathom the Christian voters who rejected him in favor of Bush because, they said, "Bush shares my values."

4. Almost everything bu$h has done screws the children
Education is so fucked up we will never catch up with the world
programs to help kids get ahead are all on the block
the kids are the ones that are going to have to pay for bu$h's spending habits
they are the ones fighting his wars when they turn 18 and there are no jobs
if I were just starting out I would not have kids with the bleak future that faces them.

Well, it's nice to know that the Repubs are consistent at least.

They are pedaphiles in more ways than one...

and documents her research in numbers and human impact. To me this is where demo's and repubs differ, 'children.' I don't think there is anything compassionate about conservatism. I don't think human life has any value to them. Only the unborn. Was it James Thurber who postulated a fiction about Nixon courting the fetal vote?
