Krugman - Exploiting the Atrocity
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/09/12/opinion/12KRUG.html

"Nor can the members of this administration simply lose like gentlemen. For one thing, that's not how they operate. Furthermore, everything suggests that there are major scandals - involving energy policy, environmental policy, Iraq contracts and cooked intelligence - that would burst into the light of day if the current management lost its grip on power. So these people must win, at any cost.

The result, clearly, will be an ugly, bitter campaign - probably the nastiest of modern American history. Four months ago it seemed that the 2004 campaign would be all slow-mo films of Mr. Bush in his flight suit. But at this point, it's likely to be pictures of Howard Dean or Wesley Clark that morph into Saddam Hussein. And Donald Rumsfeld has already rolled out the stab-in-the-back argument: if you criticize the administration, you're lending aid and comfort to the enemy. "

WOW!

2. last line is very chilling... and probably very true

"In other words, if you thought the last two years were bad, just wait: it's about to get worse. A lot worse."

4. Holy shit.
This really strikes a chord. The strongest indictment of the situation I've seen yet. Go Krugman.

5. Important quotes
Edited on Thu Sep-11-03 11:16 PM by Sliverofhope
Edit: I see, these quotes were already quoted.

Anyway, it brings to mind the importance of being unified as the left. Oh, the horrors.

6. It'll be up to the media.
The media can either roll over and play dead in which case they will hand Bush 4 more years on a platter or they do their job in which case the expected viscious mendacity of the Bush administration won't fool the voters.

7. they are media whores
and they will do what whores do best. It's up to true journalists like Mr. Krugman, and the American people, to save us from further atrocities.

8. Just read an interview of Krugman today.
He's not a career journalist, he's an economics professor. He says as far as his column at the NYT he thinks it's important but he can speak the truth because it's secondary to his real career.

I sent him an email today:

"You're a great American patriot". And he is.

9. Krugman...great as usual
Just when I started second guessing whether my thoughts were getting too extreme, or whether this place is too much of a left wing echo chamber...

Krugman, proved me wrong. It's nice to know (though it wouldn't make a difference) our thoughts on this board are not just held by those on the fringe and they are shared by brilliant economists like Paul Krugman. I would say that we here on this board have really understood that something truly wrong has happened to this nation. I'm glad Krugman has articulated this.

10. Well said, fujiyama
Sometimes DU does seem like "a left-wing echo chamber", but Krugman validates what we've been saying all along. There's nothing wrong with being left when you're absolutely right.

Krugman is always excellent, but this column really hits hard!
