NYT ED: Dean right, Lieberman wrong
At the Democratic presidential debate on Tuesday night, Senator Joseph Lieberman criticized former Gov. Howard Dean for calling on Israel to dismantle most of its settlements. "That's up to the parties in their negotiations, not for us to tell them," the senator said.

We strongly disagree. True support for Israel means helping it see through its pain and rage to its own best interest. You do not have to believe in Mr. Arafat's sincerity or the Palestinians' good will to grasp the need for a radical course shift. You need only understand the meaning of self-preservation.

1. Shame on Leiberman
Shame on Kerry, Gephardt and Pelosi for exploiting the fears
and insecurties of those poor people. They suffer enough
from bombings, but to go out of your way to exploit these
fears so you can win an election is despicable & reprehensible.

Shame on all of them.

2. Supporting Israel
doesn't mean lock-step support for Sharon. This would be the equivalent of saying everyone here needs to support Bush and his policies because he is the 'leader' of this country. What is needed is someone who will support those elements in Israeli and Palestinian society that are for compromise and peace.
