This is the booby prize the media keeps trying to hand Dean. I mean it is technically better than being McGovern, that they also want to give him. Goldwater ran a losing campaign, but the ideals and values he expressed sank into the Republican Party; giving birth to Reagan's presidency in the 80s and now President Bush. In theory Dean could have the same transformative power.
Two problems with this theory; first of all Dean isn't a hardcore liberal; he's a centrist. He's moved a bit more leftward; and his anti-war stance is firm. But in general he's not an extreme liberal. Frankly if this is the scenario we're stuck with, I'd rather it were Dennis Kunicich who were our Goldwater
Secondly, we're not stuck with it; I'm not sure the Democratic Party or the American People are willing to wait another four years to get rid of President Bush. I'm not. So perhaps the Doctor might get to become President after all (not that I'm taking sides yet; I like Dean, but I like Kerry, Graham, Clark, and Kunicich as well).
