Mark Shields - CNN - predicting Dem victory in 2004...
http://us.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/09/08/column.shields.opinion.speech/index.html

But this time, it is different. I am confident that I already know the speech that, on July 29, 2004, at the national convention in Boston's Fleet Center, the presidential nominee of the Democratic Party will deliver. I do not pretend to know who that nominee will be, but I have read much of his acceptance speech.

Before we get to the excerpts, let us -- as either Elvis Presley or Richard Nixon once said -- look at the record. President George W. Bush's economic record, that is.

For starters, 2.7 million private sector jobs have been lost since the administration took office. For the first time since 1990, inflation-adjusted weekly wages in the nation have declined for four quarters in a row.

There were 1.4 million more Americans -- including 700,000 more children -- living in poverty last year than there were one year earlier. Bush inherited a projected 10-year federal budget surplus of $5.6 trillion .Today, best estimates project that the 10-year federal budget will instead add up to a $3.3 trillion deficit. That is an adverse turn-around in federal finances -- in just two and a half years -- of nearly $9 trillion.

1. Bittersweet news
I'm glad the Dems are projected to win, but sorry that our country had to hit rock bottom before this opportunity presented itself. And it is an opportunity which can be squandered if the new people who step in decide to stay the course.

So, out with the two white men, and in with two more white men. Let's hope it's different this time.

:(..

Like Mom & Dad coming home after the teenagers have trashed the house, raided the bank account, and wrecked the cars.:(

We will do what we always do...clean up..

After 4 or 8 years of getting out of the mess, another "good time Charlie" will arrive and loot the treasury again.. When will we learn ??

7. Mark Shields is a Democrat
I like to watch him on PBS' "The Capital Gang". He knows the Democratic positions and defends them well. Months ago, I recall him speaking about why the primary process seems to be moving so quickly and so soon, and his comment was "the Democrats are fired up". There is a lot of anger and a lot of motivation out there. Look at all the money pouring into the candidates' campaign coffers already. :kick:

5. This will only happen if the eventual nominee runs from the ...
...center and is not perceived as being too liberal. The chances the candidates have to win as it stands now, imo:

NONE - Kucinich, Braun, Sharpton

LONGSHOT - Graham, Hillary

FAIR - Dean, Kerry, Edwards, Gephardt, Lieberman

GOOD - Clark, Gore

All are still underdogs, but chances seeem to be improving. Things are not as bleak as they once appeared. It seems possible now. Iraq and economy will have to remain a mess though.

8. Prediction - By Nov '04
This misadministration will be widely perceived as having been so radical, because, in fact, it is and people are finally beginning to realize it, that mealy mouthed talk that our nominee must grovel before the altar of "centrism" will not be the dominant dogma.

This election cycle will present a glorious opportunity to break the false fear of "liberalism" that has been pounded into people's heads for 23 years.

9. Personally, I think the Dems ought to pull a "reverse Bush"
Of which I mean, run from the center, and govern hard left--on economic issues!

6. Unfortunately, the article is only referring to the victory of
the Democratic nominee, and his anticipated acceptance speech at the Dem National Convention. It is not predicting victory in the presidential race. The headline on the article is misleading.

10. he's not predicting that at all
He's just speculating on what the Dem will say when accepting the party nomination for prez. The piece reads as if Shields had to through something together to meet a deadline.
