<snip"But for all the political preening by the other contenders, only former Vermont Governor Howard Dean seemed to be gaining traction with the party's base. Indeed, Dean's tech-savvy campaign of mouse pads, meet-ups and moms-on-a-mission was flying so high that no one was paying much attention to the other candidates. Dean, who flavors his criticisms of the Bush Administration's war in Iraq with the extra salsa of righteous indignation, has struck a chord with Democrats. And with polls tracking the decline of Bush's once daunting approval ratings, the Vermonter is surfing the rising tide of opposition to a President who has failed to deliver peace in Iraq or prosperity at home. "We're gonna win," Dean told the cheering throngs at rallies on a furious coast-to-coast tour in late August. "We're gonna beat George Bush."

"He spoke to that, and the response was phenomenal. He's trusting his instincts. I think he's very genuine in what he is saying." >snip

1. What Govenor Dean said about bush's Iraq link to al qaeda..
"Who is telling the truth? Our casualties and costs are rising every day, while our reputation
and relationships abroad sink further into disrepair. So it is shocking that Runsfeld and Cheney
still cannot agree why we went to war.

"It is time for this administration to be honest with the American people. 79% of them believe Saddam
was personally involved, and we know -- as Rummy admitted yesterday -- that that's not true.

"Yet Cheney, with the chance to set the record straight on national television, took a pass on telling
the American people the truth, still choosing to imply that such a connection could exist.

"This administration has misled the country from the very beginning on its reasons for the war,
the costs of the war, and its plans for the peace. It is time for the truth."

2. Great thread, zidzi. That issue of The Nation had a great cover, too:

The Nation is immensely better than the Naderite, anti-American CounterPunch Lite rag it used to be. It's genuinely progressive Democrat all the way.
