1. A New Arizona
Arizona must have changed a lot in the twenty years since I left. In those days a cartoon like this would have the country's largest-ever-seen lynch mob gathering in front of the paper's offices.

2. Arizona is changing, little by little, we have a Democratic
governor, Janet Napolitano and a Dem Attorney General, Terry Goddard. The hispanic population is growing, but unfortunately they do not vote in the numbers that would make a real difference.

But we are still a conservative legislative state, and we have that horrible blow-hard, JD Hayworth. McCain and Kyl are our 2 repuke senators.

3. Not much change
The Arizona Republic is still staunchly conservative, and Benson is regularly chastised for his cartoons.
Benson is an interesting case, he is a Mormon, who started out very conservative, and has gradually become more liberal over the years.
I think this is probably due to "growing up and learning".

It's still a pretty depressing atmosphere around here most of the time, though. Any thing remotely progressive is quickly killed by the black holes of Sun City on the west or the Mormon conrolled Mesa on the east.
.......And J.D. Hayworth is STILL my representative in Congress.....
