Brave New World author Aldous Huxley may have had more to say about truth than just about any other around—your News Writer even includes one in her email signature: “Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored.” Another one, however, comes to mind today: “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you mad.”
The News Writer just bets a whole lot of you are in just that position right about now. And you’re pushing and shoving and shouting at the top of your lungs because you just can’t understand how it could possibly be that the rest of this country don’t see it. You may even wonder, as the News Writer is at this very moment, how someone can write an email to a media outlet praising Gitmo and saying the “inmates” deserve to be there because they are terrorists who think nothing of beheading the Good Guys live on television—which just happens to be a talking point Don Rumsfeld used just the other day that got repeated ad nauseum on Faux news.
The News Writer imagines that there may be some of the nasty variety of terrorists at Gitmo but cannot understand how we’ll ever know that for sure as long as torture and threat of torture is our sole means of getting information from them.
The News Writer, for one, is disgusted by this.
But anyway, the Truth Is Out There, and as Winston Churchill once said, “Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing ever happened.”dp
