Cronkite: The new Inquisition ( crkonkite compairs ashcroft to torquamada)
In his 2 1/2 years in office, Attorney General John Ashcroft has earned himself a remarkable distinction as the Torquemada of American law. Tomas de Torquemada was the 15th century Dominican friar who became the grand inquisitor of the Spanish Inquisition. He was largely responsible for its methods, including torture and the burning of heretics - Muslims in particular.

1. Way to go Walter!
Thanks for this. I will never have the luxury of reading something like this in my local paper.

2. Why can't Walter Cronkite be President?

Why can't we have a Supreme Court that will just appoint HIM?

5. Thank you, Mr. Cronkite.
It's a shame that the only "mainstream" journalists willing to tell the truth are those who don't have to fear risking their careers.

Three cheers to Helen Thomas and Walter Cronkite.

6. This is a great thing to wake up to!
It's true about not fearing losing your career enabling you to write what you really think.

7. Cronkite is wrong on one point
"Unfortunately, security and liberty form a zero-sum equation."

Not true, and that is the administration's argument--that in order to have effective security we must decrease liberties proportionately.

The Total Information Awareness (TIA) system actually decreases security by opening many avenues for identity theft. And let's not forget, security includes safety from malicious abusers within the government itself.

8. What Security?
I felt a lot more secure when Clinton was in the White House,
and I'm sure most other Americans did too.

9. Love this guy --
Sure wish some news program would put him back on the air in some kind of regular format. His voice and cadence is still the best in the business.

10. Cronkite is on the right track, but in reality he is much to kind, much
to circumspect in his evaluation of the AG, IMHO.

11. I liked the reference to Ashcroft "and his minions"
And the characterization of the AG's actions as "medieval", "in the spirit of the Inquisition"...

And he never once mentioned the famous Monty Python sketch. What admirable restraint.

12. Walter has been called the
most trusted man in America. For my generation he was just that. In times of National crises it was his voice and integrity that held this country together. We knew Walter would always find the truth and report it. The man is a national treasure.

13. "bush never met a death sentence he didn't like"
"Ashcroft is not alone in this. His boss, while governor of Texas, seemed never to have met a death sentence he didn't like. The two of them represent a subdivision of the Republican Party known as the "social conservatives," who often have favored the use of government power to police moral issues they view as modern heresies, such as abortion, homosexuality and obscenity. They contrast with those Republicans who tend to resist such uses of federal power and can generally be counted on to defend individual rights."

Great article! Walter nails it.
