To great fanfare early last year, President Bush announced that he wanted NASA to focus on returning humans to the Moon and eventually to put humans on Mars. Unfortunately, since Bush and Congress have not provided sufficient funding for such an ambitious undertaking, this "Vision for Space Exploration" is turning into a vision for the decimation of much of the scientific research at one of this country's premier science agencies.
A great variety of research programs are being delayed or canceled due to the budget squeeze - from aeronautics research to the next generation of Mars rovers to missions that could discover and study Earth-like planets around nearby stars. But the most important casualties are satellites and instruments that study the Earth and help us learn more about the only planet available to us.

Comments and feedback quite welcome, of course. I've not had an op-ed published by a newspaper before. This is a first for me.
