Bolton Block (Financial Times, via TWN)

June 15, 2005

Senator Bill Frist, the US Senate Republican majority leader, yesterday held a press conference to urge Democrats to stop blocking the nomination of John Bolton as US ambassador to the United Nations. Appearing with John McCain, the maverick Republican, Frist emphasised that it was crucial to fill quickly the UN position, which he said had remained vacant for 200 days since the resignation of John Danforth, the previous US ambassador.

In an attempt to reinforce the urgency of the UN position, Frist listed a series of significant events that had occurred in those 200 days.

"We have seen the orange revolution in Ukraine, the Cedar Revolution in Lebanon, the vote in Iraq, the vote in Palestine, the hope of opening the presidential elections in Egypt."

That just leads Observer to wonder whether the US should even bother sending an ambassador to the UN. Democracy seems to have fared better when the US chair has been empty.

9. Think of the obvious for a moment
If the first Buffoon of the United States and Liein' Leezy had put a diplomat in nomination, it might have been filled by now. Now, they want to promote the policies of the empire with convicted perjurers and Liars like Chicken George...

2. It does not take a genius to understand that this Administration is
hiding info on Bolton that needs to be seen by the Senate. More Senators are getting the message. I had read this had to do with Corporate cover-up more than intelligence manipulation....

5. Seriously. If you could cut ten floors off the UN, why not
just one office...

7. Yeah. I think their motto should be
The Financial Times: like the Wall Street Journal, but for adults.

8. The UN Is Much Better For Our Absence
They get things done, they project concern, compassion, and strength; why fuck it up by putting Bolton or ANY Bushite stooge in there?

They couldn't get Kofi Annan convicted of anything..the timetable has slipped into impossible dreams, but the machine blindly grinds on (until it grinds to a stop).

Had to laugh at Bush trying desperately to rein in the House, get them not to hold UN dues hostage (again) since that blew up in their faces last time, and this time could lead to expulsion altogether....

It's going to be a lovely summer, and the new fall season will be a smash hit!
