Police uncover Corby breakout plan
If you have been following this story you know our friends down under are going batshit over this conviction. The actual breakout would be an interesting story if they pulled it off.

Police uncover Corby breakout plan
Ellen Whinnett

AUSTRALIAN Federal Police are investigating a plan to recruit ex-soldiers to break Schapelle Corby out of jail in Bali.

A South Australian man is offering to pay crack ex-soldiers for weapons, false passports and expertise to bust Corby out of Indonesia and spirit her away to a secret location.

The man, Mark Streater, says he has the resources to fund the operation and has already secured recruits.

Mr Streater said the operation was "100 per cent do-able" and insisted it was genuine break-out plan.

"I have no doubt someone will get her out of the country," he said.

2. hehe, going 'batshit' is a good description
For a while it's been our Lacey Peterson equivalent.

It's been amazing how much coverage this case has attracted as opposed to the imprisonment of David Hicks at Guantanamo Bay, or even Douglas Wood, the Aussie who was until a few days ago held hostage in Iraq. Sure, he's had a lot of coverage since they freed him but there were weeks where his case just slipped from view while the media obsessed over Corby.

If the poor woman isn't guilty, then I feel terribly sorry for her, but it worries me that the indignation of many Aussies seems to have an underlying "how dare those people find one of ours guilty of anything". At least the Indonesians brought her case to court. More than we can say so far about the US government and David Hicks.

3. Unfortunately
David Hicks and Douglas Wood do not have the looks of Corby, so some of what we are probably seeing is the male "how dare you lock up a pretty white woman" syndrome (more evidence of my genders weakness for women). :dilemma:

Our media is presently obsessed with Natalie Holloway missing in Aruba instead of covering the daily Iraq slaughter caused by Bush. Our government has moved into an 8 year dictatorship hiatus from the two election steals, so don't expect justice for Hicks from this country until our idiot-in-chief is sent packing back to his Texas pig farm. Sorry.

I think the batshit reference popped in my mind from a 2:00 AM walk around the Sydney Opera House I had last October when I noticed bats overhead after I heard poop splats just missing me. :D

4. I know the Sydney harbour bats well.
I lived for many years on Lavender Bay, which is diagonally opposite the Opera House and Bridge and the park in front of my apartment was full of fruit bats. October always seemed to be the month they were most active -- a mid spring thing, I guess. Luckily I had covered car parking, but every morning you could walk out on the street and find cars covered in batshit. I think it's the fruit diet makes them so prolific :-)

And of course you're right about the pretty woman thing with Schapelle Corby. But I'm also cynical enough to think the Corby case is more comfortable because it means we can focus on holding another country's government responsible for what's gone wrong, rather than ours -- as in the Hicks and Woods cases.

I had noticed the Holloway obsession. Being in the news media myself I often flick by Fox News just to see what they're passing off as news. Seems they're awfully lucky a blonde American woman went missing around the same Michael Jackson got let off. I can never believe how they build whole programs around these kind of cases.

I'm not holding my breath on David Hicks. Maybe he is guilty of something, but I doubt he deserves being held in a cage at Guantanamo Bay out of reach of the Geneva Conventions or any reasonable legal system for more than three years, as I think it is now.

btw, I believe your last two elections were stolen as well, but as much as most Aussies hate George Bush, they just can't get their head around the real possibility of electoral fraud in the USA. I get treated as slightly deranged whenever I mention it.

5. Here's some ammunition
For those who imply your deranged show them the following regarding "exit polls" from the 2004 election steal. Exit polling in the U.S. has been historically as close and accurate as you can get in polling, yet the 2004 percentages were skewed late at night from tampering with the electronic voting machines (last minute software patches?).

I look forward to visiting OZ again, bats an all. It's dinnertime now and I'm hankering for some more Rocks Cafe fish 'n chips. :9
