Post-Dispatch: Durbin stays on attack over prisoners
Edited on Sat Jun-18-05 07:38 PM by longship
Well, it looks like Durbin isn't going to stop. That's good news.

Here's the link to a St. Louis Post-Dispatch account of the Durbin rhetorical flap (and that's all it is, a rheotorical flap).

Midway into the article:

A sharp-tongued, bare-knuckled partisan, Durbin gained national stature this year with his elevation to the Senate Democrats' No. 2 leadership post. With that job has come increased scrutiny. His remarks last week put him at the center of a burgeoning brouhaha, eliciting a string of condemnations from the White House, conservative talk show radio hosts, and even some of his normally collegial GOP colleagues.

That's the kind of guy we need. Let's see if there's more...

But in an interview, he sounded unbowed.

"If there's a lesson to be learned here it's not that my remarks were wrong or that there's any need for apology," Durbin told the Post-Dispatch Friday. "It's the fact that they have successfully twisted them out of context."

His critics, he said, are trying to deflect attention from the underlying debate about whether the Bush administration has crossed a line in its treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay and elsewhere.

They said he was unbowed. That's gotta nice ring to it. We need more unbowed Democrats.

There's a guy who deserves our unqualified support.

Ooops! Maybe should be LBN post.

Somebody tell Newt its more despicable to hand your wife divorce papers while she is in the hospital. And tell him it is despicable to impeach a president for doing the same thing you were doing. Asshole.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich Calls on U.S. Senate to Censure Senator Richard Durbin

WASHINGTON, June 18 /U.S. Newswire/ -- In a letter sent to United States Senators on Saturday, June 18, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich called on the Senate to censure Senator Richard Durbin for his speech comparing U.S. servicemen serving in Guantanamo Bay to those of the Nazi Gestapo, Soviet KGB, and Pol Pot's killers in Cambodia.

"Senator Richard Durbin has dishonored the United States and the entire U.S. Senate. Only by a vote to censure Senator Durbin for his conduct can the U.S. Senate restore its dignity and defend American honor," Gingrich wrote.

He added, "It's one thing for one Senator to endanger young Americans and defame America; it would be the shame of the Senate if the other 99 Senators did not stand up to defend America and to defend the reputation of our young men and women in uniform."

Gingrich called Senator Durbin's comparison "despicable."
