An Extreme Case Of Hubris
June 21, 2005
Many politicians behaved badly during the Terry Schiavo fiasco. But
Florida Gov. Jeb Bush gets the hubris award for his behavior following the release of an autopsy report last week vindicating the courts in this sad case. The report supported the contention of Ms. Schiavo's husband Michael, her legal guardian, doctors and many judges that she would not have recovered from a collapse 15 years ago during which her brain was deprived of oxygen. The autopsy showed her brain was badly damaged and had shriveled to half its expected size. In spite of armchair assessments from Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and others who tried to intervene inappropriately in the removal of her feeding tube, Ms. Schiavo was blind and could not have responded to visual stimuli, notwithstanding her parents' claim.
Still, the governor persists in treading where he does not belong. He has asked the Pinellas County prosecutor to investigate a purported gap between the time Ms. Schiavo collapsed and the time that her husband called 911.
This is a witch hunt, spurred by grieving parents who can't let go. If there had been questions at the time about Mr. Schiavo's response to his 26-year-old wife's collapse, surely they would have surfaced long ago. Since then, an army of lawyers, judges and medical personnel have pored over this case. The autopsy did not specify why her heart stopped, but it did note that there was no evidence she had been abused.
