The Tenacious Trio

By Dana Milbank
Post
Wednesday, June 22, 2005; A10

The door to Rep. Mark Udall's office opens at lunchtime yesterday, and 13 chattering reporters and cameramen stream in.

The Colorado Democrat gawks. "I wish I could get this kind of coverage on my own," he says.

Indeed, the journalistic pack -- from CNN, the New York Times, The Washington Post, the Associated Press and elsewhere -- is interested not in the congressman but in the three people sitting demurely in armchairs in his office: a computer worker, a temp and a non-practicing lawyer.

1. Definitely mocking...
He refers to one of the three as a "co-conspirator." And brushes aside another by saying that she stands at a press conference "toting cell phone and Snapple." But then he's all business when describing the White House reaction -- "The White House says that's bunk."
He does mention other disturbingly gestapo-esque events from the campaign trail, but these are almost parenthetical. The real story, for Milbank, seems to be that Colorado lawmakers -- and indeed, many other Democrats -- are enamored with three non-entities who have no right to the fame they now hold.
How dare these average citizens step into the Washington limelight? Where do they get off?
Milkbank, like many DC reporters, fails to remember that, in this republic, these citizens, like the rest of us, are the bosses of the nation. They have as much right to be involved and to have their questions answered as any citizen.

2. it's not mocking the 'three' I think
it's more mocking of the system that gets these three more attention than, frankly, they deserve.

here we go, will it be three posts or only two before someone calls me a right wing apologist and a freeper?

5. what's unfortunate
is that these three have had to go to these lengths to get attention. The media should be covering this, and it deserves better than Milbank's semi-snarky bit on it.

The White House and the Secret Service know who the guy who impersonated a Secret Service agent is - but they won't say. This incident is just the tip of an iceberg on administration squashing of dissent - it's not right to select crowds at taxpayer funded events.

In fact, it's a crime.

So, I can't agree that these three are getting more attention than they deserve. I think this story should be on the front page. If we had a media that wasn't bought and sold (like Milbanks is), it would be.

7. on the front page?
sure of the Denver Post. But why should it make the front page of the NYTimes, or the national news? oooh, someone impersonated a Secret Service agent? that's national news?

notice there's a war on?

8. impersonating a Secret Service agent is a felony
the White House knows who this person is

they refuse to release the name

they're covering up

if this had been clinton, it would have been on the front page.

shit, we can't even get the DSM on the front page - war on or not...

and the bigger story is that the Denver incident is not isolated - it was part of the administration's strategy of keeping people out of taxpayer funded events.

9. so's robbing a bank
a bank robbery in Denver doesn't make the Post.

Look, I would remind you that these people are making an allegation while I don't doubt them, I also haven't seen any hard evidence that this happened, or that anyone knows who it was. have you?

10. really, though, a bank robbery in denver doesn't involve a
coverup coming from the White House.

This story has been covered quite a bit locally and there are other witnesses to the event than the three involved - there has also been reporting that the secret service had the name of the person, but wouldn't release it.

if you google "denver three" there's a lot of stuff, both pro and con...

11. if the Secret Service knows
I wouldn't expect them to release it, frankly. until/unless charges have been filed, law enforcement units really shouldn't be bantying around people's names when they are accused of a crime, right?

look, I don't have the time or energy to argue with you. You don't seem very interested in learning much about this thing, anyway.

6. You know what
tHE Corporate media WILL NEVER be on our side.
Why do we give them any power?

I turned off Corp.Cable news April 9th 2003 while watching Saddams statue fall and havent watched one second of Cable news since that time (with exception of daily show). I say fuck the media... turn it offr and dont even subscribe to those anti-american pieces of shit-- washington post, nyt, time, newsweek etc etc. Support the news media that tells the truth... if you have to read newspapers read the Guardian.
