Salon/Conason: Karl Rove is a Liar

In attacking liberals' reaction to Sept. 11, Bush's senior advisor once again resorts to McCarthy-style tactics.

By Joe Conason

June 24, 2005 |
Karl Rove is a liar and a scoundrel. He is not a patriot but a pure partisan, as his own record proved long before now.

The other night Rove lied about the liberal reaction to the Sept. 11 attacks and again exploited patriotism for narrow partisan advantage in a time of war. He seeks to divert public opinion from the failures of the Bush administration by suppressing dissent, stigmatizing "liberals" and returning to the same old tactics that the Republican far right has used ever since the McCarthy era.

His unhinged rhetoric is a sign of deep worry within the White House, of course, as polls continue to show deepening public alienation from the president and growing skepticism about the war in Iraq. Most Americans now understand that they have been deceived about the war from the beginning, and most doubt the Bush administration's strategy for extricating our troops. Moreover, Rove must cope with Republicans as well as Democrats who are openly dissenting from the administration line, not only regarding Iraq but on the Bolton nomination and Social Security privatization.

Evidently Rove believes that demonizing Democrats and liberals will distract the nation from the Bush administration's failures. That tactic has certainly served him well in the past, when he managed to divert attention from the failure to deal with the terrorist threat before 9/11, the failure to speak honestly about the alleged threat from Iraq and the failure to plan intelligently for the Iraq invasion and its aftermath. We have paid an enormous price for those failures, yet cynical Rove still thinks he can convince us that this is all the fault of "liberals."

As a New Yorker who stood on my street and watched the Twin Towers fall, I take strong personal exception to Rove's ugly slander against "liberals." According to him, liberals "saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers." That broad-brush smear is false, and Rove knows it.

1. It's funny, just the other day
someone put a poll up on DU, "Can the president get any more milage out of 9/11?" Well, he's certainly trying with Karl Roves's statements. Will it succeed? I'm not sure, but for the first time ever it seems, there is some doubt.

I live for the day we see this illegal regime and its immoral familiars booted from the White House. kkkarl rove belongs in a prison cell. plain and simple. A large portion of the illegal deception can be layed squarely at his feet.

4. Recently there was an article
that said Bush's numbers plummeted when they didn't have Kerry to kick around anymore, and Bush was seen on his own 'merits.' I'm so glad that this latest bashing is so painfully obvious to all but the drunkest on kool aid.

5. A Few Clear Points About Karl Rove and Recent Statements
It is what Mr. Rove has said in silence that is more sinister than what he says out loud:

Liberals wanted to indict rather than go to war: This is an under the breath rejection of the notion that the perpetrators of 9/11 were international criminals and needed international police action to deal with them. Instead the solution that was embraced was destructive wars against poor countries with the resultant loss of innocent lives and crucial human infrastructure. Mr. Rove is a cheerleader for militarism versus the rule of law. Of course none of this involves spilling his or his family's blood.

Liberals wanted therapy for the American people about those who would attack us: This is a global call for hated of muslims and again raises the specter of religious war. It is a dismissal of using the strength of our diversity versus the promotion of the domination of white American culture.

So to bolster his political base, Mr. Rove, has sunk again to the despicable low road of again playing on people's fears. Hopefully it will not work this time and people will see it for what it is.

Mostly though Mr. Rove is committing treason against the ideals that founded this country. He calls for blind nationalism(his favorite president being McKinley, the conquerer of the Phillipines)akin to the Tories of the Revolutionary period. Those loyal to the "mother country" did not see the importance of dissent and the need for consensus in governing. The Tories supported elitist or monarchal rule. The Parliament and King George were an anathema to those seeking citizen representative government.

It makes this group of neocons a political anachronism. They must be beaten back by attacking their premises. Going point by point with them only brings more of the same from their side. Therefore without apology and in strong terms Mr. Rove must be portrayed as a traitor as stated above and further an out and out coward since he refuses to accept or acknowledge the consequences of his disasterous policies. He puts the blame on those who sought other solutions. These neocons must be beaten out of power both for our good and quite frankly for theirs. In spite of their bad behavior they get to survive along with the rest of us once they are put back into the political closet of worn out ideas.
