Here's What's Wrong In One Sentence

by David Sirota

Every now and then, a politician lets slip a comment that shows us exactly what's wrong with our political system, and exactly how bought off our government really is. Today, it came from Maryland's governor, and he managed to boil it down into one sentence:

"(It is) bad policy because it...establishes that a state will dictate to businesses the type and level of health insurance they must provide for their employees."
- Maryland Gov. Bob Ehrlich (R) on a proposal to force Wal-Mart to provide bare minimum benefits to its workers

That's right - in our bought-and-paid-for political system, the idea of making Corporate America fulfill any minimum responsibility to our country, such as making sure workers at the wealthiest company on earth aren't on welfare, is off the table. This, in a country that supposedly cherishes "family values."

4. Oh, make me laugh.
The government cannot dictate to businesses the type and level of health insurance they will provide for their employees.

But the government can dictate the type and level of education a parent will subject their child to...

and what a woman can do with her body after a certain point in her pregnancy or if she is under a certain age...

and that two consenting adults cannot marry because they have the same genitals...

and whether or not a person can choose to end their life on their own terms or waste away tethered to machines for decades...

and that people of the "majority" religion can dictate morality for the rest of the nation...

etc, etc.

That is a crock of horse manure IMHO.
