Why London? Why Now?
...
For the moment, I am assuming this was the work of Al Qaeda. If that is the case, the timing of the attack is significant. The G8 Summit has, as its primary focus, two issues that could strike at the heart of Islamic extremism by draining the swamp: climate change and poverty.
Addressing climate change requires radically improving transportation fuel efficiency and transitioning off fossil fuels as a source of energy. To the extent that the United States and the rest of the world adopts sensible climate change policies, the strategic importance of the Persian Gulf diminishes and America has more room to promote real democratic and economic reform in the region. Al Qaeda's strategy, however, requires American dependence on Persian Gulf energy, to ensure that America continues to wage war to protect its energy supply.
...
Addressing poverty in the developing world, particularly in Africa, also hurts Al Qaeda's side. To the extent that America is seen as an imperial aggressor, planting strings of military bases to protect access to economic resources, the Al Qaeda propaganda is reinforced. Significant progress on global poverty, however, also "drains the swamp" of the recruits, resources, territory and cooperation that these groups need to operate.
....
Looking Forward
So now it is time for progressives to keep the focus on draining the swamp, not on counterproductive military adventures that will only reinforce Al Qaeda propaganda. Aggressive and innovative policies to address climate change and poverty are two of the most powerful ways accomplish this. So is a smart exit strategy from Iraq and a final settlement between Israelis and Palestinians.

3. I don't buy the Why Now Premise - But I agree about the focus |
|
My read on today's events is classic and but not so sophisticated false flag /psy-ops.
Why Now?
Here's the "Why Now" answer. Bush, Blair, Cheney and Rumsfeld were periously close to going down through the JUSTICE SYSTEM.
First: Winds of Justice getting close to Taking Bush and Blair Down.
As of July 7th 2005, we have a hell of alot hard evidence vis a vis the "Downing Street Memos" to put both Bush and Blair on the witness stand with International Tribunal facing charges of crimes against humanity, as well as public prosecution of high crimes and treason in each respective country - for deliberately putting each of our nations people in harms way on a phony premise and to justify invasion and occupation a soverign nation, who posed absolutely no threat to any country. (Not even Isreal, because we completely obliterated their capability to wage war against any bording neighbor, much less strike an offensive attack on the UK or in the USA).
Winds of Change getting close to taking Dick Cheney down.
This thing with Rove, and presumably Dick Cheney's office possibly Cheney himself are a hairs breath away from being criminally indicted for their role in outing Valerie Plame vis a vis the NYT columnist Robert Novak (and through a convaluted, serpentine like chain of contacts and machinations, Miller and Cooper could/should have led back to the events surrounding the Downing Street Memo, directly implicating Cheney's office in the staging of events in the months leading up to the war)
Winds of Change getting very close to taking Rumsfeld down
Guantanomo and Abu Ghraib - remember how these torture photos and videos were supposed to be released in a few weeks following court orders for June 30th ?
Though the "where and how" of today's events were not specifically predictable in terms absolute precision, a series of "events" were completely predictable - didn't we openly predict at one point recently, that the way to kill momentum on all these issues was for a "terrorist" event to occur?
The timing is more than just a little bit coincidental, doncha think?

4. I think the timing was on purpose, but.... |
|
I on't think the 'cells' of jerks doing these things are that smart. What did they think the Brits would do, pack up and leave? They're already cutting troops in Iraq. I think AQ screwed up (yes, i know it's ironic to say that that murderous bastards 'screwed up'; trust me, I'd like nothing more than to catch the snot-holes). The Brits INVENTED being tough in the face of attacks. Did AQ forget the Blitz? 'Stiff upper lip'?

5. The obvious comparison is Madrid. |
|
The date is 7/7, the G8 meeting. As for why, they said the would, there was an OBL tape that said they would after Madrid IIRC. They have now hit New York, Madrid, Washington, London, among others. It ought to be clear at this point also that our "leaders" - and I use the term very loosely - are impotent to do anything to stop this sort of attack. I would advise the citizens or Rome to keep an eye out (or get rid for Berluscolini.)
