A reporter (Judith Miller) goes to jail in a case without heroes

New York Times reporter Judith Miller went to jail Wednesday, a martyr to some in her profession but not to all.
Time magazine’s Matt Cooper got off the hook. And Robert Novak, the columnist who set off this clash of powerful institutions by aiding and abetting in a crime, is still sitting pretty, smug and unworried.

This isn’t the Pentagon Papers, an earth-shattering confrontation over the public’s right to know. It’s more about an administration’s ability to manipulate the press in a tawdry act of political payback, hiding behind the semi-sacred journalistic assurance of confidentiality. This is why the professional journalism establishment is roiling with conflicting views on the case.

1. maybe I'm a deluded optimist

but I hope and pray that Joseph Wilson and Valerie Plame and perhaps even Fitzgerald will end up being the heroes in all of this.

For Wilson and Plame to be roasted after years of selfless civic service to thier country (something the neocons could never even comprehend) is an absolute travesty of justice.

2. I hope this leads to Cheney. Fitzgerald seems like

a bloodhound with a very strong scent in the air. Rove is involved of course, but Cheney is one of the meanest men I have ever seen. It is just his style to try to get revenge on someone who didn't think the way he does.

3. Though Fitzgerald

was touted as an arch conservative, the older breed (not in their current manifestation) of conservatives can be very, very big on law and order. He was also described as being outrageously thorough and I instinctually felt that the truth would come out in the end. Just didn't want it too take so bloody long.

I have no clue why most can't see Crashcart as the roboheart, disingenuous, war monger/profiteer that he truly is.
