Whether or not presidential aide Karl Rove committed a crime is a matter for the judicial system to decide. But it is up to President Bush to address the impression that he and others in the White House have long misled the public on Rove’s misconduct.
Bush won the White House in part by presenting himself as a man of strong character. Yet many Americans now harbor fundamental doubts about Bush’s honesty. The president only aggravates those doubts with his silence on the Rove affair.
Bush should lay the facts before the American public, quickly and completely. If he and his aides did not intentionally deceive the public, he should say so. If they did deceive, Bush obviously owes the country an explanation.
