San Jose Mercury News editorial: No . . . and nobody
From the San Jose Mercury News
Dated Sunday September 28

No . . . and nobody
The recall is not a solution to state's problems; vote No

From the day the first petition was signed, recalling Gov. Gray Davis looked like a simplistic, illusory solution for the state's real problems.
The recall is no solution to the state's budget crisis, no solution for struggling schools, and no solution -- quite the opposite -- for the poisonous partisanship that prevents the Legislature from finding solutions on issues from energy to health care.
The seven months of paid-for signature-gathering, partisan ma- neuvering, legal hair-splitting and political campaigning since then have made the recall look even worse.
Californians should vote ``no'' on the recall.

1. NEWSPAPERS DECLARE OPPOSITION TO RECALL
I got this as an e-mail and will ask for the link...

Los Angeles Times, Mercury News, Sacramento Bee, Modesto Bee Ask Californians to Vote "No" on the Recall

LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Times, San Jose Mercury News, Sacramento Bee and Modesto Bee in editorials today announced their opposition to the costly, partisan effort to recall Governor Gray Davis.

"The Times opposes the recall because it doesn't make sense. There were no reasonable standards in calling for a new election," the Los Angeles Times writes today. "Changing the governor in midstream would not address what really ails California state and local governments; the recall of Davis instead would invite more political chaos and economic uncertainty. Worse, the state and the nation could look forward to more recalls pushed by poor losers who simply didn't want to wait for the end of a four-year term. The vituperative, scorched-earth politics of partisan payback would be never ending.

"There is another good reason why we oppose this recall, " the Times adds. "The alternatives...are not superior to Davis. In fact, they are potentially worse."

Today's San Jose Mercury News writes, "From the day the first petition was signed, recalling Gov. 2. While the editorial writers are
looking at Arnold and feeling queasy (could it be they know more than their readers?), Kali-for-nyuns are being inundated with bogus Ahnold ads promising them he's "for the people" and going to make the whole state one giant Disneyland.

Meantime Bustamante is airing a few ads in which he humbly asks for the voters' "consideration" while surrounded by an unidentified Latino family - his own? Doesn't say. Fine by me, but I wonder how it's playing to the prop 187 voter who doesn't like being in the caucasion "minority" as it is.

Lots of variables here. I'm hoping that when push comes to shove, people stop and think that maybe Davis isn't so bad and doesn't deserve being fired this way.

If the vote count is honest, I think he'll prevail.
