OpEd: Miami Herald, Chas. Zwick on SS, and why bush plan is a dud:
This is a good OpEd, especially in the Miami/FL area:


''There is no longer any doubt that Social Security needs to be saved'' has become the mantra of those who want to make major changes to the Social Security System. After four years of incantations, the American people still do not believe it. And the American people are correct.

It is time to pull back from the daily hyperbole and look at how we got here. Over the last four years, the nation has heard over and over that: (1) A crisis exists in the Social Security System, and it needs to be fixed immediately. That alarm, however, has been weakened to (2) There is no immediate crisis, but there may be one in the future, and responsible action is needed now even if we are not sure what the problem is. Now this argument has almost been abandoned, morphing into (3) There is a growing surplus in the Social Security Trust Fund that should be put into a new program of government-run private accounts before Congress uses the funds for other wasteful programs.
