Cindy Sheehan Steps Into the Leadership Void

by Arianna Huffington

August 11, 2005

During my many years as a writer, I’ve interviewed hundreds of people. But talking with Cindy Sheehan this morning was unlike any conversation I’ve ever had. Even though we were talking via cell phone -- and had a crummy, staticky connection at that -- her authenticity and passion reached through the receiver and both touched my heart and punched me in the gut.

She spoke with a combination of utter determination, unassailable integrity, fearlessness, and the peace of someone who knows that their cause is just. Her commitment was palpable -- and infectious. It reminded me an old quote about the great Greek orators: “When Pericles spoke, the people said, ‘How well he speaks.’ But when Demosthenes spoke, they said, ‘Let us march!’”

The time has passed when we can stand around waiting for a knight on a white horse to ride to our rescue. We’ve got to look to ourselves -- to the leader in the mirror. Our elected officials have woefully failed to provide the leadership needed on this most vital issue of our time. And stepping into that void is Cindy Sheehan. Inspiring us. Touching our conscience. Calling forth our courage and our commitment. Focusing our outrage. And acting as a catalyst for the tens of millions of Americans who know that the war in Iraq is a disgrace.

In Cindy Sheehan's own words, August 10, 2005: "The mainstream media is a propaganda tool for the government. Without the Internet, we wouldn't really know what is going on. We the people have to cause the change. I never got involved before because I didn't know one person could make a difference. But now I know that one person can make a difference. Thanks to all of you."

Peace.

4. That was quite inspiring in
itself.

"Who knows, her example might even be just the thing to give Hillary and Harry and the rest of the Democratic leaders the spine transplant they so desperately need. But don’t hold your breath. Instead, use it to show your support for Cindy Sheehan -- and for our troops."

5. Does anyone know if there is a list of the lies being told about her?
I've been super busy and must choose and pick what I read, but I have picked up scents about lies and would like to see them in list form to help me remember them, know the outcome, and be able to tell others. Is there a summary - a DU type scopes?

6. Our generation's Gandhi, MLK?
Our cause has been begging for a leader for years. Throughout history, unlikely individuals have taken such positions, right beating might in the end. Perhaps Sheehan will be the one to alter the course of our history.

can awake the dormant sheeple and without violence. Peace.

9. I've got my flameproof suit on so here goes...
"The time has passed when we can stand around waiting for a knight on a white horse to ride to our rescue. We’ve got to look to ourselves -"

I agree with this line 100%. The irony is that to read this board, it seems like that's what everyone is expecting Cindy Sheehan to be. She's just one woman doing something for her son and for other mother's children's. She's got to inspire us to do something other than worry about whether Anderson Cooper or Wolf Blitzer covered her for 6 minutes rather than 7 minutes on their shows. Or whether Michael Moore will go down there and stand vigil with her.

The inspiration she's giving should be for us to do something, not sit around and turn her into a savior or a white knight.

13. Yeah, and I for one...
am gathering what I hope is dozens of concerned citizens to go stand on a busy street corner tomorrow evening during rush hour with a bunch of signs and flyers that scream our support for Cindy, for the truth, and to demand accountability from the liar-in-chief that is leader of the free world. The time is now and this thing is GROWING!!!!

Now YOU march!!!

17. You are soooo right!
I'm selling my kayak to get to the pigfarm!
Don't seem to enjoy it as much as I would like to.
Seems I'm alway busy, highway blogging, writing
letters, going to vigils, planning protests,
Talking til I'm blue. Counter-recruiting,
alienating friends and family,Everyone thinks I'm
crazy.

Still make time for mountainbiking.
The concentration isn't always there
tho' and that's worrisome, as I've crashed twice
in 10 days... (I can assure you my crashes are
way more sincere than *'s) I could fuckin
toast him on a mtnbike in 10 minutes I
assure you.

19. Ms Sheehan is not a savior, she is a person striving to make a difference.
So are many of us who are doing all kinds of stuff and not thumping our chest about it. I hope you are doing something other than posting a snarky comment to a news item, that in the midst of a 16 hour 'day job' I took a few moments to post.

Peace.

11. Americablog: "Bush to Cindy Sheehan: Oh yeah, sorry"
What she wants to know, George, is why her son and the other soldiers were killed in Iraq. For what purpose, she wants to know. You can't answer that question without lying.

16. A terrific read
I think Arianna was honestly and greatly impressed by Cindy, and conveyed that to her readers very well. Anyone who reads the Huffington Post, yet hasn't heard of Cindy - all three or four readers - will certainly look into her story after finishing this article.

18. I truly hope that someone has shared with Cindy Sheehan ...
... the reality that she truly is the early 21st Century America "Rosa Parks."

I also hope she has read Larisa's exceptional, Pulitzer-quality report on the Roberts co-conspiracy to cover-up Bush's deception of the Congress and the American people regarding his illegal war of aggression and occupation of Iraq. Because, without a doubt, Ms Sheehan is the ideal person to bring those facts to the attention of millions.

Peace.
