The latest from your favorite kooky thespian, Michael Moriarty!

The comrade-assisted suicide of North American liberalism

By Michael Moriarty
web posted August 15, 2005

It began with Timothy Robbins' film Bob Roberts. Here was an American "revolutionary" artist predicting what his comrade-in-arms Norman Mailer also prophesied in his first novel, The Naked and the Dead: that an American, white Anglo-Saxon Protestant conservative would be there to literally smash these revolutionary dreams to pieces.

Others of the Edmund Wilson/American Marxist fraternity are now saying that the "beast" is the white, Anglo-Saxon and Protestant President George W. Bush himself. However, Bush, Jr. does not have the Tom Sawyer smile of Bob Roberts nor the military credentials of General Cummings. This Junior does not play a musical instrument either.

So, there are in the Bush Jr. curriculum vitae some major, missing pieces to Mailer and Robbins' prophetic profile of the giant, WASP, American Beast. Mailer's vision, spawned in the Paris Sorbonne, and Robbins' conjuration out of Warren Beatty's Soviet Hollywood have only been entirely and profoundly fulfilled by a beast that arose out of their own Democratic Party backyard. When William J. Clinton becomes the head of the Napoleonic United Nations, he will bear the title of General. All the other trappings of Bob Roberts have been his since the moment he crawled out from under the rock of Hope, Arkansas, and set his sights not only on the Kennedy Presidency but also on the very robes of Napoleon himself, the Secretary Generalship of the United Nations.

How confident of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency to help fast-track the Arkansas wunderkind right by the Mario Cuomo, into the White House and thence safely into the throne of the UN. That the family of George H.W. Bush (as the president's father is now called to avoid confusion) and the Clinton power couple have been playing volleyball with the Oval Office for 17 years is a very clear reflection of Pierre Trudeau's achievement with Bay Street Conservative Brian Mulroney (who brought Canada the hated GST – the 7% Goods and Services Tax on everything, aka the Gouge and Screw Tax). All these parties maintained the illusion of a two-party democracy while entrenching a backroom deal between capitalists and communists. And of course this was all done "to save the human race from nuclear suicide."

I PROMISE YOU it gets nuttier than this. Get a load of his Obama Conspiracy Theory...

you promised, you delivered...that guy is bat-shit crazy.

It's nearly as incomprehensible as when Shrub tries to speak English.

His rant reads like a Jeane Dixon column....

edit to inquire: is Moriarty his birth name, or is he also under the illusion that he's the arch-enemy of Sherlock Holmes?

10. Moriarty
I have been convinced for some time that he chose the name because of his looming, peeled-egg brow and his beady eyes which always seem to oscillate back and forth like the eyes of a lizard. Add a few wrinkles, a frock coat, an opera hat and you have Paget's Dr. Moriarty to the life.

7. Mr. M. is currently living/drying out in Vancouver.
Edited on Sat Aug-20-05 07:38 AM by nine23
And yes he's a complete wacko, but - trust me on this - a harmless, almost lovable, wacko. Kind of like your "favourite homeless person". (And prior to his going on the wagon, he had been found wandering the streets numerous times after being kicked out/"banned for life" from obscure bars in the 'burbs). It's all been reported on, and is well known industry news.

I work in the film biz in Vancouver. I do about 50% Hollywood features, and the other 50% of my work is on crappy "Movie of the Week"/TV movie shite, as well as TV pilots that will never see the light of day. I also do some indy work. While Mr. Moriarty's career is now totally on the skids, he nonetheless still gets the odd bit part in some of these crappier productions, and when he does, we're scared shitless of this guy. (Ever wondered what it's like having to "direct" a ward full of mental patients? You get the picture...)

AND GET THIS: In between those rare film/TV gigs, he "tickles the ivories" at a downtown piano bar/bar 'n grill. I haven't checked it out yet, but apparently, it's become quite trendy and fun to go down to this bar JUST TO SEE IF HE'LL FLIP OUT while belting out the tunes.

But, to be fair to the guy, it's all very harmless, and he IS in recovery of sorts, both mental - and from booze.

On edit: As some of my Canadian DU friends are aware, I will not give out my real name on this board, nor will I link people to my blog or website, post my production credits, or make announcements re: my career, festival openings, etc. even though I'm very proud of my work. That's because a) freeper lurkers are the scum of the earth and could try to affect my career, and b) I'm scared shitless of people like Mr. M after making posts like this!!!

11. That's good to know. I tried to keep my post lighthearted...

...and actually wish him all the best in his recovery. He did great work back in the day, but he is quite "out there" (to put it mildly). He's nowhere near a full comeback in acting just yet, as the job requires one to "show up" - and I mean that on several levels.

Two years ago, he was simply lost - and again, I mean that on several levels. I'm talking: disappearing from set at lunch, only to be discovered in some dive bar 20 miles out of town two days later...I suppose one could say his acting career is in recovery as well.

But hey, thanks for the heads up on his CD. I've heard he's quite good, is/was very capable, and I was really only half-joking when I said people go to see if he'll "flip out" with his psycho-babble while performing. He's become a bit of legend in that repect...

edit: I'm now even feeling a little guilty about posting this stuff. I may end up having to work with this guy again, and it could end up being a totally smashing experience. He's actually my kinda' guy, regardless of his mental/psychic health. It's all pretty well common knowledge tho...

9. It is really sad to be honest
He is a very good actor when he is sane. Watch the first 2 years of Law and Order if you don't believe me.

17. Oh, hey, listen, I agree! This is an L&O household.
The only reason I started this, shall we say, "Moriarty Watch" is because of my devotion to the show.

15. I thought he was great on L&O. Very compelling actor...
I was heartsick to find out he was a puke. I guess his mental condition accounts for that. Too bad.

14. Q is one of my favorite odd films...
...right smack in the middle of a low-budget 'giant creature' horror film is an MM 'method' portrayal. Great stuff.

The director Larry Cohen's made other good/bad films like IT'S ALIVE.

I didn't know the guy was this far gone. I always liked him better on L&O than Waterston(sp?). I liked Waterston better as an Indian in RANCHO DELUXE which is, as they say, another story.
