A life turned public through protest (Cindy Sheehan)
CRAWFORD, United States (AFP) - Cindy Sheehan did not expect at the age of 48 to become an icon of opposition to the Iraq war in the United States.

But her decision to pitch her tent outside US President George W. Bush's Texas ranch to demand a meeting about the death of her son Casey in Iraq has done just that.

"I don't want George W. Bush to utilize my son's sacrifice to justify the killing," Sheehan said on August 7, at the start of her protest here.

Founder of a group called Goldstar Mothers for Peace, she had until then limited her activism to participating in public debates and anti-war conferences.

But her smile, her calm confidence accentuated by her height, her straw hat and the grief that frequently manifests itself in tears and hugs have made her a media star. For ten days, she has been front-page news in the United States.
