Bob Costas had nerve to refuse to be another exploiter of tragedy

Meet Bob Costas, media dissenter.

Mr. Costas, best known for announcing sports games, did something unthinkable for a broadcaster these days. He acted on principle.

Bravo.

Mr. Costas refused to exploit the tragedy of Natalee Holloway, the Alabama teenager who disappeared weeks ago while vacationing in Aruba. Mr. Costas was the scheduled fill-in host on Larry King's CNN talk show. But when he learned that the topic would be Miss Holloway -- again -- he "respectfully declined to participate."

<snip>

The main exploiter is Greta Van Susteren on Fox News. She has been floundering about for a topic since Laci Peterson's murderous husband was convicted and put away.

Also: Bill O'Reilly wouldn't want to be lumped onto this post, but here's another Costas note: On his radio show yesterday, O'Reilly said he "respected" Costas for refusing to host the show. "He said he was smart not to do it," according to a tipster. But E.D. Hill wasn't so supportive, "implying that as a sportscaster, he's treading on tabloid already..."

1. Bravo to Costas!
I sometimes hate him because he comes across as a pompous little bastard, but I will give him some dap for this. If only more reporters had his principles.

2. Olbermann last night was saying when he had to do these stories
He was forced to by his producers. I respect Keith, Bob Costas, and of course Jon Stewart for having integrity and especially to Keith and Bob for risking their careers to speak out against it.

3. ED Hill
proves what a numbskull she is. Sports has been an instrumental part of American History. Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier was the real start of the Civil Rights movement. She should read some of David Halberstam's books about sports and maybe she will learn something

8. Anyone who can sit next to that obnoxious blowhard
And take the crap he hands out to her deserves no credibility whatsoever. He often cuts the mike on her because she (sometimes) has the temerity to try and disagree with him.
The first time he did it to me, I would have been out of there so quick there would have been a sonic boom, and the fact that she goes back for more every day just demonstrates what a whore she really is.
So her dissing Costas for having the balls she so desperately lacks, is laughable.

7. I think it will pay off for Bob in the future. If he is after King's job..
he's done well. He has shown himself to be a real human being.
