When my mother did a community service expedition in Hungary earlier this year, she found herself repeatedly having to insist that not all Americans are racist.
Her Hungarian acquaintances, however, remained unconvinced. They mentioned Americans' resentment of illegal Mexicans -- who nevertheless take care of American children, pack American meat, and prune American shrubs. The Hungarians pointed out the serpentine lines of black people trying to vote in Ohio last November. And they even asked about whitewashing in sitcoms like "Friends" and "Seinfeld," both of which are aired in Hungary.
Still, my mom insisted that it would be wrong to conclude that most Americans think of blacks or Hispanics as some sort of permanent underclass.
This week, though, the lid may have come off America's racism problem. And it's a lot uglier than I ever imagined.
