Haves, Have-Nots ... Less than a Half-Mile Apart in N.O.
Haves, Have-Nots Play Out in the Extreme Less than a Half-Mile Apart in N.O.

NEW ORLEANS -- At the Royal Sonesta Hotel in the French Quarter, dinner the last few nights has consisted of grilled tilapia, bow-tie noodles with tomato basil sauce, a T-bone steak and a nice red wine to wash it down.

It's being prepared by two of the Bourbon Street hotel's chefs, who are using propane grills to prepare meals for the 31 staff members who have stayed behind to protect the 500-room hotel in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. <snip>

Less than half a mile away, at the New Orleans Convention Center, Sadique Jabbar's first meal Friday was a bag of Cheetos someone gave her around 11 a.m.

"You know the only reason we've been fed?" Jabbar said. "Some men out of prison have been breaking into buildings, getting food for us and bringing it back here." <snip>

1.  Talk about wanting to slap someone, the Manager said,
"For the fun of it, I asked the piano player to play the theme song from Titanic," Wandfluh said.

Talking about the last meal the Rich folks had.

3. It's news to me
I didn't know there were hotels that had water and other supplies in the French Quarter.

5. (sigh) I remember having breakfast at the Royal Sonesta.
Vacation long ago with my dad. We wanted to eat, but had no idea where to go. The Royal Sonesta was a surprise hidden behind an unassuming facade on the street. We ate breakfast in an open courtyard with the trees blossoming and flowers raining down like fragrant snow.

I guess they were lucky to barricade themselves in, and didn't get hit too badly by the weather. Good for them.
