The buck stops at the Oval Office
By comparing 9/11 with Katrina, Bush is deflecting criticism of his inept leadership
The havoc wrought by Hurricane Katrina is the latest event to be compared to the atrocities of four years ago. Evoking the spirit of defiance that marked the United States then, Bush has linked Katrina and 9/11. Utter nonsense and an insult to those who perished in both tragedies as well as their relatives and loved ones.
9/11 was a brutal man-made attack of almost unbelievable inhumanity. Katrina was a natural catastrophe made much worse by human ineptitude, laziness, racism and cost-cutting. Imagine if the Superdome had been full of white people.
It is difficult to comprehend just how out of touch he was. He stated that no one could foresee the levees bursting. But it was foreseen. Warnings were issued in the days before Katrina made landfall that the levees would not hold.
But the ultimate responsibility, especially for someone who keeps mentioning 9/11, must be with the president. When a major city in the United States is threatened, the buck stops at the Oval Office and not in New Orleans.
